Guide to Adding, Removing, and Switching Google Accounts on Android Devices

Setting up a new Android device often involves adding your primary Google account. However, many users may find the need to access additional accounts later on. Fortunately, Google simplifies this process, allowing seamless management of multiple accounts from a single device. In this guide, we will outline the steps to add, switch, and remove Google accounts on your Android smartphone.

How to Add a New Google Account on Your Device

There are two primary methods to add a new Google account to your Android device. The first method provides a comprehensive overview of all the accounts linked to your device.

Open the Settings app on your phone.
Scroll down to find Password, passkeys & accounts, or tap on Accounts depending on your device model.

Within this section, you will see a list of your linked accounts, including any previous Gmail/Google accounts. At the bottom of the screen, tap the Add account button.

Next, select Google from the list of account types. Here, you also have options for various email types such as Personal (IMAP), which allows access from multiple devices, or Personal (POP3), suitable for emails downloaded solely on your device.

Now, enter your email or phone number along with your password. If you don’t have an account, click on Create account to set up a new one.

Your newly added Google account will now appear under the Password, passkeys & accounts menu. At this point, all associated data, including any Gmail signatures you use, will begin syncing with your Android device.

Alternatively, you can add an account directly through applications such as Gmail, Google, Chrome, or the Play Store. To do this:

Open the Gmail app and tap your profile icon in the top right corner.
Select Add another account.
Pick Google and then enter your credentials.

This method will ensure your new account is added seamlessly to your existing accounts list.

Switching Between Google Accounts on Android

Once you’ve successfully added multiple Google accounts, switching between them is a breeze. Simply open Gmail, Google, or any relevant application, tap on your profile icon, and select the desired account from the list.

You will see all your email addresses listed, allowing for quick and easy access to each account.

Removing a Google Account from Your Android Device

Deleting a Gmail account from your device is a straightforward process. You can do this via the Settings app or directly from any of the applications you’ve linked to your account.

Method 1: Using Android Settings

Go to Settings -> Password, passkeys & accounts again.
Locate and select the account you wish to remove.
Hit the Remove account button.
Confirm the removal by tapping Remove account again.

The selected Google account will be successfully removed from your device and will no longer appear in other linked applications.

Method 2: Using Gmail or Google App

Alternatively, you can remove an account via the Gmail or Google app by doing the following:

Tap on your profile icon and select Manage accounts on your device.
Select the account to be deleted, press on Remove account, and confirm.

Remember that this action will delete all contacts and information stored under that account. Consider whether it might be easier to simply switch between accounts, especially if you need to maintain access to stored data. If you wish to change your phone’s default Google account, it may be necessary to remove older accounts accordingly. Fortunately, Android offers flexibility in configuring defaults.
