Final Fantasy VII Remake Makes Its Switch Debut

Initially launched for the PlayStation 4, Final Fantasy VII Remake has finally made its way to a Nintendo console, arriving on the Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this year. This release marks one of the most remarkable third-party adaptations to date. Surprisingly, the last-generation Nintendo Switch, with some thoughtful modifications, can also run the PC version of the game effectively. This achievement is even more impressive considering the performance demands of the Box64 + Wine translation layer utilized to facilitate gameplay on an ARM architecture.

Innovation by Modding Expert Naga

The technical prowess behind this development came from renowned modder Naga. In a recent video, Naga illustrated the process of transforming a Nintendo Switch Lite into a more powerful variant dubbed the Nintendo Switch Lite “Pro”. This upgrade involved not only the installation of an additional 8GB of RAM, effectively doubling the device’s base memory, but also enhancements to its storage with a 256GB eMMC and the addition of a Super5 OLED screen.

Impressive Game Performance on the Modded Switch

The video provides a fascinating look at how the modded system copes with various gaming experiences, both native and emulated. While demonstrating capabilities such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt running at 45 FPS, Naga also showcased the Switch Lite Pro’s adeptness in emulating PlayStation 3 titles like Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, Wii U classics like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, as well as PS Vita games such as Gravity Rush and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. However, the modded system’s crowning achievement is its ability to run Final Fantasy VII Remake at a playable standard.

Enhancements and Limitations

While the Nintendo Switch Lite Pro may not have the processing power to execute the game at its optimal settings, it demonstrates impressive performance, achieving playable framerates between 20 to 30 FPS for a PC title running through a translation layer. This endeavor exemplifies how modifications like increased RAM bandwidth could have opened doors to even more “impossible ports”during the original lifespan of the system.
