El Paso County recently recognized the immense cultural influence of BTS and their loyal fanbase with special honors ahead of the group’s highly anticipated sold-out concerts at the Sun Bowl Stadium.
During a commissioners court meeting held on Monday, county officials unanimously passed resolutions bestowing the prestigious “Estimado Amigo”Award—an accolade that represents El Paso County’s highest honor—on BTS. Additionally, they proclaimed May 2 and 3 as “BTS Weekend in El Paso County.”
This award acknowledges the collective impact of BTS members RM, Jin, Suga, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. According to KFoxTV, county officials highlighted the band’s global reach, positive lyrical messages, and the boost in El Paso’s visibility on the international stage given their Borderland tour stop.
Celebrating BTS in El Paso
The recognition from county officials aligns perfectly with the BTS WORLD TOUR “ARIRANG”performances scheduled for May 2 and 3 at the Sun Bowl, attracting fans from all corners of the U. S.and nearby Ciudad Juárez.
In another resolution, the commissioners commended the “El Paso, TX Official BTS ARMY GROUP, ”a local organization instrumental in connecting fans throughout the area. The group has actively created opportunities for fan engagement, facilitated events for visiting ARMY members, and promoted charitable initiatives centered around BTS’s themes of self-acceptance and social responsibility.
One notable highlight is the fundraising campaign to illuminate the iconic Franklin Mountains Star in purple for a week, from April 28 to May 4, as a welcoming gesture to the band, as noted by CBS4 Local.
Local tourism authorities anticipate that BTS’s concerts will provide a significant economic boost to the community. Brooke Underwood, Executive Director of Visit El Paso, informed the commissioners that the events could potentially yield an economic impact of approximately $75 million, factoring in motel bookings, restaurant patronage, and overall spending by visitors during this dual concert event.
Pursuing the opportunity to host BTS took nearly a year of planning, especially after the successful two-day performance by Coldplay at the same venue, exemplifying El Paso as a vibrant global entertainment hotspot.
The event at the courthouse also showcased cultural performances, including the talented youth mariachi ensemble Mariachi Corazones de San Jose, alongside enthusiastic cheers from Paydirt Pete and the University of Texas at El Paso cheerleading squad, all in a spirited salute to BTS and their dedicated fanbase.
County Judge Ricardo A. Samaniego articulated that these resolutions reflect both fondness for BTS and pride in the local community’s efforts to warmly welcome them. He described El Paso as “rich in humanity”and underscored the area’s eagerness to extend kindness to visiting fans, as reported by KTEP.
