Controversy Shadows “K-Pop Demon Hunters”at the 98th Academy Awards
Netflix’s animated film “K-Pop Demon Hunters”achieved significant recognition at the 98th Academy Awards by winning the prestigious titles of Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. However, these accolades have been clouded by a controversy stemming from the abrupt interruption of the acceptance speech, which sparked discussions of potential bias.

During the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre, the film’s creative team took the stage to express their gratitude. Despite the emotional and heartfelt nature of their message, viewers quickly noted the strange timing of when the team members were cut off mid-speech, raising questions about equal treatment during the awards ceremony.
As captured by Naver, composer Lee Jae delivered an emotional speech reflecting on her journey and the significance of their success. She eloquently stated, “I thank the Academy for giving me this wonderful award. Growing up, people teased me for liking ‘K, ’ but now, we are all singing songs with Korean lyrics. I am proud of our journey.”
Following Lee Jae’s heartfelt speech, after passing the microphone to another team member, the sound abruptly cut off, accompanied by transition music, which effectively ended their opportunity to speak. Despite efforts to continue, the music played over them, leading to frustration among the attendees and viewers alike.

Coverage by MK highlighted broadcaster Ahn Hyun-mo’s critical view of the situation during her live stream of the event. She noted that the preceding acceptance speech for the Best Short Film award was notably lengthy, contrasting sharply with the rushed treatment of the “K-Pop Demon Hunters”team, which featured a large number of award recipients.
This incident has ignited extensive discussions online, with many questioning the fairness of the perceived interruption. Some media sources have labeled it as an issue of racial disparity; however, the Academy has yet to issue an official response to the controversy.
“K-Pop Demon Hunters”creatively blends the worlds of K-pop and the supernatural through the story of a fictional idol group battling malevolent spirits with their music. The film’s original soundtrack has gained significant global traction, particularly with the hit song “Gold.”
This catchy tune soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it remained for eight consecutive weeks. Earlier in the awards season, the film accumulated notable accolades at the Golden Globe Awards and made history as the first K-pop movie to earn a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
