Kakao Games Updates Release Schedule for Highly Anticipated MMORPGs
This morning, Kakao Games, a prominent Korean publisher, announced adjustments to its release schedule during the Q4 2025 earnings conference. Among the updates were details regarding two highly anticipated MMORPGs: ArcheAge Chronicles and Chrono Odyssey.
Launch Delays: What to Expect
Initially expected to launch in 2025, both titles have faced setbacks, now scheduled for 2026 and beyond. Notably, Chrono Odyssey has been delayed to Q1 2027, while ArcheAge Chronicles remains on track for Q4 2026. This is slightly surprising given that ArcheAge Chronicles has yet to undertake any Closed Beta Tests in Western markets, although Kakao Games expresses confidence in a global release before the year concludes.
Shifting Focus: ArcheAge Chronicles
Originally announced as ArcheAge 2 in November 2022, the developer XL Games (which is a subsidiary of Kakao following a $100 million acquisition in February 2020) revealed a significant shift in vision nearly two years later. The project has transitioned from a direct MMORPG sequel featuring traditional “sandpark”elements to a more personal online action RPG format. The decision aims to broaden the game’s appeal on a global scale by emphasizing Player-versus-Environment (PvE) content, as opposed to the previous version’s heavy focus on expansive PvP.
Reimagined Gameplay Elements
The PvP structure has transformed; it is now optional and organized through various formats such as arenas, battlegrounds, and zone-based competitive events. While trade runs are still available, their scale and mechanics have evolved, allowing either solo gameplay or team participation.
Community Building and Endgame Focus
Housing features have been redesigned to encourage shared spaces and community interactions. The emphasis has shifted from territorial ownership to personal expression, helping mitigate the land rush problems observed in the original ArcheAge. The endgame now prioritizes PvE activities centered around exploration, challenges, and meaningful progression. Group activities have shifted from large raid frameworks to smaller instances designed for teams of two to five players, enriching the narrative and gameplay experience through dungeons, crafting, trading, and exploration. Overall, the development team aims for ArcheAge Chronicles to respect players’ time, promoting flexible gameplay without the grind that characterized the first installment.
Chrono Odyssey: Mixed Reception and Refinements
Turning to the second MMORPG, Chrono Odyssey recently completed a limited-time Closed Beta Test on Steam in June, but feedback was lukewarm. In response, developer Chrono Studio is overhauling nearly all aspects of the game, which has prompted the extended delay. It’s important to note that both titles are being developed for PC and consoles, with anticipated cross-play functionality.
Insights from Kakao Games
During the earnings call, an executive elaborated on the extended development timelines for ArcheAge Chronicles and Chrono Odyssey, stating:
Regarding ArcheAge Chronicles and Chrono Odyssey, our overarching approach is to further enhance the completeness of the game build. In the process of conducting the test and going through the optimization process, we wanted to make sure that we fully reflect all the enhancements that is required. So once again, we made certain adjustments because we wanted to further expand on the validating of the development. So through these efforts, basically the timeline has been adjusted so that we could minimize the operational risk as much as possible.
With these updates, Kakao Games aims to ensure both titles meet player expectations, reflecting a commitment to quality and innovation in the MMORPG landscape.
