Apple’s Innovative Leap: The eSIM-Only iPhone Fold
The introduction of the iPhone Air this year not only marked a bold design evolution but also set a precedent with its ultra-slim profile. Notably, Apple made a decisive choice to eliminate the SIM tray entirely, opting for an eSIM-only framework that will be available globally. As we look ahead, rumors suggest that the forthcoming 2026 iPhone Fold might follow suit by adopting a similar strategy.
Based on claims from prominent Chinese leaker Instant Digital, it appears that Apple is poised to launch its first foldable iPhone without a physical SIM tray, further solidifying the eSIM-only approach. However, this isn’t the first time such reports have surfaced; previous insights hinted at the iPhone Fold mirroring the design ethos of the iPhone Air.
Renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has noted that the anticipated iPhone Fold is designed to be exceptionally thin, akin to two side-by-side titanium iPhone Air devices. Supporting this notion, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo affirmed this idea earlier in January, indicating that Apple’s pursuit of a thinner device continues to be a focal point in its development strategy.
While removing the SIM tray could facilitate a sleeker design, it also presents several challenges. The limitation of global eSIM support may complicate user experiences, particularly during the transition to new devices. These complications could be especially pronounced in mainland China, where consumer preference frequently leans towards physical SIM cards. In response to the iPhone Air’s launch, Apple collaborated with major carriers like China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom to bolster eSIM accessibility. However, customers are still required to visit carrier stores for eSIM activation.
Looking ahead, the iPhone Fold is anticipated to make its debut in September 2026, coinciding with the release of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This timing indicates a strategic shift in Apple’s product release strategy, moving towards a biannual cycle for iPhone launches starting in 2026.
