Recent developments in the healthcare technology sector have drawn attention to the partnership between Apple Health and ChatGPT Health. An investigative report by the Washington Post has surfaced critical concerns regarding the accuracy and reliability of AI-driven health diagnoses made by ChatGPT Health, leading skeptics to reinforce their views of AI as merely a sophisticated mimicry of human intelligence.
Exposing the Flaws in Apple Health and ChatGPT Health Integration
Earlier this January, it was promoted that OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health service could provide users with precise health insights by securely syncing with personal medical records and wellness applications, such as Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. The goal of this integration was to assist individuals in comprehending recent medical tests, getting ready for doctor visits, giving tailored dietary and fitness advice, and understanding healthcare insurance options based on their health behavior.
However, the findings from the Washington Post investigation reveal troubling deficiencies in placing trust in ChatGPT Health’s interpretations of personal health data obtained from platforms like Apple Health.
In a revealing experiment, reporter Geoffrey Fowler provided ChatGPT Health with a staggering dataset—29 million steps and 6 million heartbeat measurements logged in his Apple Health app. When assessed for cardiac health, the chatbot rendered a dismal F grade. Shockingly, Fowler’s physician dismissed this evaluation, indicating his health risks were significantly lower and that further testing would not be necessary, even suggesting that the insurance might not cover additional assessments to challenge the software’s unfounded conclusion.
Even more alarming, Fowler discovered that the chatbot’s assessment was inconsistent. Re-posing the same question to ChatGPT Health resulted in grades oscillating between a B and an F. Such fluctuations highlight the service’s lack of a reliable diagnostic framework and raise significant concerns about its potential dangers. These discrepancies present serious implications for Apple’s goals of enhancing the Apple Health service with advanced AI capabilities.
