The Ryzen 7 9850X3D has emerged in discussions as a contender closely mirroring its predecessor, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. While many titles reveal a marginal edge for the new chip, the overall performance differences are subtle.

Set to unveil its official benchmarks on January 29, the AMD Zen 5 Ryzen 7 9850X3D has already attracted attention due to a recent leak highlighting its performance. Initial synthetic benchmarks suggested that the new processor offers only a slight advantage over the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. However, gaming benchmarks indicate that the 9850X3D is capable of hitting phenomenal FPS figures, particularly exceeding 900 FPS in select titles.

A user known as @g01d3nm4ng0, who goes by the handle chi11eddog, shared a comparative chart showcasing the performance of the two Ryzen processors across seven different games. Although the specifics of the benchmarking method remain unclear, the trends suggest minimal performance improvements when gaming. Utilizing a GeForce RTX 5090, the tests were conducted at a resolution of 1080p, revealing that the 9850X3D only slightly outperformed its predecessor in a limited number of titles.

Comparison of FPS performance between Ryzen 7 9850X3D and 9800X3D (NVIDIA RTX 5090 - 1920x1080)

For instance, popular titles like Battlefield 6, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Doom: The Dark Ages exhibited minimal performance differences. In contrast, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D showcased a performance increase of around 3.53% to 4.95% in games such as GTA V: Enhanced, Final Fantasy 14 Downtrail, and Cyberpunk 2077. It’s essential to note that these gains are subtle and likely imperceptible to the average gamer, with the 9850X3D peaking at a 6.38% advantage in Counter-Strike 2—still notable, as it sustains over 800 FPS, though the precise graphics settings used remain unspecified.

Despite an observed enhancement of nearly 50 FPS, this difference may not translate to a perceivable advantage in gameplay, as discerning between frame rates like 775 FPS and 825 FPS is typically difficult. Moreover, the full potential of such high frame rates can only be unlocked with the newly announced 1000 Hz monitors. Anticipating the formal reviews that will surface shortly, expectations lean towards the 9850X3D performing slightly better than the 9800X3D in a variety of applications, largely credited to a boost clock that is 400 MHz higher than its predecessor.
