An Overview of the Warlock Class
As the eighth class introduced in Diablo IV, the Warlock is tailored to be a dark, aggressive demon summoner, departing from the archetypal back-row spellcasters. This class embodies a character who has endured harrowing experiences, utilizing demons as instruments of destruction rather than allies, even if that means causing collateral damage. Heavily influenced by heavy metal culture, the Warlock’s aesthetic is as fierce as its gameplay.
The Warlock operates using two main resources: Wrath, fueling chaotic endeavors, and Dominance, empowering the summoning of formidable demons. The gameplay revolves around three essential strategies: Create (summoning either demons or battlefield elements), Control (managing and positioning these entities), and Combo (executing chained interactions that recycle summons to power subsequent actions).
With the introduction of the Warlock, players will encounter five novel keywords:
- Hex: Increases damage taken from Abyss abilities based on the target’s missing life points, stacking up to three times.
- Eviscerate: Affected enemies instantly lose a percentage of their Bleeding Life and suffer ongoing bleeding damage.
- Shadowform: Enables unhindered movement, where each movement contributes to stealth, albeit at a cost of stack depletion.
- Demonform: Enhances maximum life and amplifies Demonology skill damage with kills while active.
- Volatility: Randomly empowers Hellfire Skills during attacks, providing an increase in damage for subsequent casts.
The Soul Shard system is a standout mechanic for Warlocks, binding one of four powerful demons to the player upon reaching Level 30. This unique feature significantly alters their playstyle, allowing players to select one of three Fragment choices that fine-tune the behavior of each primary shard. The four primary shards offer distinct gameplay approaches:
- Legion Shard (Bound Demon: Ae’grom) – Focused on spawning numerous demons, casting Greater Demon Skills temporarily boosts the cast speed of Lesser Demons while reducing cooldowns.
- Vanguard Shard (Bound Demon: Abodian) – Prioritizing mobility and aggressive frontline tactics with skills that summon additional demons, enhancing offensive capabilities.
- Mastermind Shard (Bound Demon: Laalish) – A control-centric option that utilizes Shadowform and Abyss skills to weaken enemies and enhance damage.
- Ritualist Shard (Bound Demon: Vollach) – Unique in its approach, sinking life force to enhance Overpower and facilitating powerful attack opportunities.
Additionally, Warlocks can utilize the Demon Form mechanic, which allows them to transform into a demon during battles, acquiring the powers of their summoned demons. The ultimate ability, Metamorphosis, enables players to seamlessly switch between human and demon forms, providing dual skill bars. This transformation’s duration is influenced by the character’s build.
In terms of weaponry, Warlocks can choose from a diverse array, including daggers, flails, swords, axes, and maces, available in both one-handed and two-handed forms, along with offhand focuses. Notably, Blizzard has mentioned a conscious effort to launch new classes slightly more powerful to accommodate the learning curve, ensuring a sense of strength in various build paths.

Season of Slaughter: Become the Butcher
Season 12, branded as the Season of Slaughter, will officially commence on Wednesday, March 11, introducing players to the ability to transform into the legendary Butcher for the first time in the series. The seasonal questline, entitled A Taste of Power, kicks off in Gea Kul on the Seasonal Realm. Players will have three ways to undergo this transformation:
- Slaughterhouses: A new dedicated activity allowing players to remain in the Butcher form throughout the entire session.
- Shrine of Slaughter: A novel Helltide event where players utilize Meaty Offerings at a shrine to attract nearby foes.
- Ceremony of Slaughter: An intense event replacing standard PvP combat in the area, triggering every 10 minutes. Each kill contributes to Savagery, which serves as a progression system, culminating in the transformation into the Butcher.
Once transformed into the Butcher, players wield melee-focused attacks, capable of cleaving, charging, and hooking enemies. This transformation also provides area attacks, such as Furnace Blast. Players who massacre enemies as the Butcher earn a new resource called Fresh Meat, which can be used to acquire Bloodied Items. This new tier of item quality can appear on any droppable items, including those with the Ancestral tag.
Bloodied Items are categorized into three specific equipment slots:
- Rampage (Armor): Stat boosts that scale with the current Killstreak Tier.
- Feast (Weapons): Bonuses based on the total kills achieved during a streak, such as resetting cooldowns.
- Hunger (Jewelry): Offers rewards that scale with kill streaks, enhancing drop rates for Runes from Elite kills.
These Bloodied Items are exclusive to Season 12, but Blizzard is exploring options for integrating seasonal items into future ones. Players will encounter empowered dungeon keys on Torment difficulties, which feature the Relentless Butcher as an affix, a variant that respawns immediately upon defeat. Health bars indicate the level disparity between standard and Bloodied difficulties, while Bloodied Sigils drop guaranteed Bloodied items.
Season of Slaughter also introduces a five-tier Killstreak reward system that provides XP and seasonal reputation for consecutive kills. However, dying resets this streak and its associated rewards. The developers have made adjustments to loading screens, allowing for a smoother experience as players maintain kill streaks during dungeon runs.
Season of Slaughter will also roll out a variety of new Unique items dropped by the Butcher Lair Boss, which will remain as a permanent addition following the season:
- Blood-Mad Idol (amulet for all classes): Grants perpetual Berserk status at the cost of increased damage taken.
- Wendigo Brand (ring for all classes): Increases damage dealt and maximum health after a certain number of kills.
- Rustbitten Dirk (dagger for specific classes): Delivers increased damage to isolated enemies, perfect for boss encounters.
- Wyrdskin (gloves for all): Attacks apply vulnerabilities and weaken enemies according to proximity.
- Thousand-Eye Reaver (one-handed axe for specific classes): Grants movement speed and ferocity with stacking.
As players progress through Season Ranks, they can accumulate Smoldering Ashes to unlock five different seasonal blessings, enhancing various aspects of gameplay like increased Fresh Meat drops or more Slaughterhouse Keys.
With the seasonal patch, several quality-of-life improvements will be implemented, such as default open doors in nightmare dungeons and optimized loading times. Additionally, significant enhancements have been made to the Tower mode, including five new tile sets and new boss encounters to ensure a competitive integrity for players pursuing high scores.
To celebrate the season launch on March 11, Blizzard will offer a free trial for the Paladin class until March 18. This allows players on Battle.net, PlayStation, and Xbox to experience the base game and Paladin class up to level 25 without the need for a prior purchase. Those who pre-purchase the expansion will be able to continue their journey, retaining their progress in Sanctuary.
Lord of Hatred: Additional Updates
Further details from the livestream revealed that existing classes will undergo extensive skill tree overhauls, introducing new variations and enhancements for each. Significant attention will be given to the Druid, which can now customize shapeshifting forms for specific skills. Meanwhile, the Necromancer is expected to have notable changes as well, emphasizing that every class will see improvements. A dedicated livestream will occur closer to the April 28 expansion release, promising to share further announcements.
Additionally, Blizzard’s press release highlighted that Lord of Hatred will introduce double the number of monsters compared to the previous expansion, Vessel of Hatred. This includes fresh horrors like sea creatures, chimeras, and returning adversaries from earlier Diablo titles, such as the fearsome Rat King and massive Beasts.
