AppleCare+ Customer Receives iPhone 17 Pro Max Replacement with 8x Increased Internal Storage After Theft

Misplacing your iPhone 17 Pro Max can feel like a gut punch, making it essential to invest in an AppleCare+ plan that covers theft and loss. A fortunate customer recently shared their experience of how Apple sent them a new unit, boasting a remarkable eight times the internal storage of the original device. Considering the exorbitant fees that Apple typically charges for storage upgrades, whether for an iPhone or a Mac, receiving a replacement with significantly more capacity can certainly be a delightful surprise.

Significant Savings Through an Upgraded Storage Replacement

On Reddit, a user known as ScienceFuture2300 recounted the moment his 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max was lost. Once he filed his claim, he encountered an unexpected twist: he received a brand-new 2TB model instead of a replacement with equivalent storage. This fortunate turn of events saved him approximately $800, assuming he resides in the United States. While it’s uncertain if this was an oversight on Apple’s part, one thing is clear—no one would refuse an upgraded iPhone 17 Pro Max with double the storage capacity.

The user’s story attracted numerous comments, indicating that Apple may not have had the precise color match for the lost unit, prompting them to issue a higher-capacity model at no additional charge. The comments highlighted a trend where Apple occasionally provides upgraded replacements without extra fees.

“AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss includes coverage if your iPhone is lost or stolen, up to two times every year. And AppleCare One includes coverage if your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch is lost or stolen, up to three times every year. Each incident is subject to a deductible, and taxes may apply. Theft and loss coverage requires you to have Find My enabled on your device at the time it is lost or stolen and throughout the claims process.”

This isn’t the first instance where Apple has offered a significantly enhanced replacement without additional charges. For example, there was a case where an Intel-powered 2018 MacBook Pro user received an M4 Max MacBook Pro as a replacement, valued at over $4, 000, completely free. Similarly, another upgrade incident involved a customer who got an M5 MacBook Pro instead of their older 2019 model, albeit they expressed dissatisfaction with certain business practices of Apple.
