Apple is ramping up its sales strategy for the forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, employing a distinctive and culturally resonant approach aimed particularly at critical markets such as China. This strategy hinges on the introduction of new color options deemed auspicious in many Asian cultures.
Mark Gurman Reports: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max May Feature a “Deep Red”Color
Recently, we explored how a unique factor contributed to the remarkable sales performance of Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max in China: its striking ‘Cosmic Orange’ shade. This color, closely associated with the luxury brand Hermès, has become a coveted choice among Chinese consumers, positioning the iPhone as not just a tech device, but a symbol of luxury.
This specific color option emerged as a key driver of sales growth, contributing to a notable 38 percent increase during the quarter leading to December. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, highlighted during a recent earnings call that foot traffic in Apple stores across China surged with double-digit growth in the same quarter.
According to recent data from Counterpoint Research, Apple recorded an impressive 8 percent year-over-year sales growth in China for January 2026, a stark contrast to the broader market, where major Chinese smartphone manufacturers experienced significant declines. This trend underscores Apple’s robust positioning in the competitive landscape.

This week, Mark Gurman, a reliable source at Bloomberg, reported that Apple is considering a “deep red”color variant for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. This color choice is particularly meaningful in regions like China and India, where it symbolizes good fortune, joy, and prosperity. In India, it also connotes happiness, marital bliss, and sensuality.
In addition to the anticipated deep red option, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to include purple and brown shades. However, Gurman suggests that these alternate colors may simply represent variations of the deep red concept, as the tones are relatively similar.
Interestingly, Apple seems to be pursuing a different strategy for the upcoming iPhone Fold, which is expected to feature more subdued colors. These will likely include various shades of dark gray or black, as well as lighter options, encompassing white and soft silver tones.
