Apple Emerges as Clear Victor in $11.5 Billion Amazon and Globalstar Satellite Constellation Partnership

Apple’s strategic investment in Globalstar is poised to deliver substantial dividends, while also paving the way for enhanced satellite connectivity features in future iPhone models. This potential is underscored by Amazon’s recent announcement of a $11.5 billion acquisition deal with Globalstar, subject to regulatory approval.

Apple’s Strategic Move: Recouping Investments and Leveraging Amazon’s LEO Expansion

In 2023, Apple made headlines by securing a 20% stake in Globalstar for $400 million. Alongside this investment, the tech giant committed an additional $1.1 billion aimed at bolstering the satellite connectivity features integral to its iPhones. This calculated move positions Apple favorably for future returns as satellite technology evolves.

Currently, Apple harnesses Globalstar’s satellite capabilities for critical services like ‘Emergency SOS’ and Roadside Assistance, available on the iPhone 14 and later models as well as the Apple Watch Ultra 3. These services enable users to reach emergency services even when out of cellular range. Additionally, the Find My app utilizes satellite support to update and share users’ locations, while messaging capabilities with personal contacts and first responders further enhance the value of this partnership.

As discussions intensify, Amazon’s intent to acquire Globalstar reinforces the competitive dynamics in the satellite communications landscape. Once finalized, this acquisition will value Apple’s share in Globalstar at approximately $2.3 billion—reflecting a staggering 475% increase from its initial investment of $400 million. This impressive valuation encompasses the earlier cash injection Apple provided, leaving ample margins for future growth.

Furthermore, the collaboration between Amazon and Apple is set to deepen, with a new agreement that ensures the continued integration of Amazon’s Leo satellite network into Apple’s product offerings. Amazon highlighted this strategic partnership, stating:

“With the new Amazon-Apple agreement, Amazon will continue to support iPhone and Apple Watch models currently using Globalstar’s existing and planned upcoming low Earth orbit satellite constellations, being manufactured by MDA Space, and collaborate with Apple on future satellite services using Amazon Leo’s expanded satellite network.”

Amazon’s ambitious Leo constellation plans to encompass thousands of advanced satellites in low Earth orbit, promising sufficient capacity to accommodate hundreds of millions of customer endpoints worldwide. As this expansive network rolls out, users can expect a significant enhancement in the satellite-based connectivity features available on iPhones, along with increased bandwidth capabilities.
