Google is enhancing Android Auto by introducing several new features designed to elevate user experience and resolve existing limitations. Recently, it came to light that Android Auto is on the verge of enabling local media playback from USB drives.
In addition, it has been reported that Google is planning to adapt tablet-optimized applications for automotive use. With this upcoming feature, applications tailored for tablets can be utilized inside a parked vehicle equipped with a compatible screen.
Moreover, Google is reportedly making strides towards allowing third-party dialer applications within Android Auto. At present, users can only use Google’s Phone app for managing calls, which eliminates the possibility of installing and utilizing preferred dialer apps, even if they are operational on the user’s mobile device. This limitation bars users from accessing dialers like Truecaller, ACR Phone, and others via Android Auto.
Fortunately, Google is addressing this issue by incorporating new flags in the latest release of Android Auto, version 13.0. These flags not only signal the introduction of third-party dialer support but also establish an allowlist for external dialer applications within Android Auto, implying that only approved dialers will be accessible through a vehicle’s display.
However, developers must make further modifications to their dialer applications to ensure compatibility with Android Auto. Google has published comprehensive guidelines (identified by Android Authority) that assist developers in refining their apps for Android Auto.
These guidelines emphasize creating a streamlined user interface that ensures easy operation while driving. Additionally, they introduce a “Calling apps”category, offering relevant templates to simplify the development process for these applications.
As of now, the “Calling”category is not available for wide access, being restricted to select Beta Partners. This implies that only a limited number of dialer applications on the Play Store will gain compatibility with Android Auto.
