AMD’s Supply Challenges for the Radeon RX 9070
In light of recent reports, AMD appears to be grappling with supply chain difficulties similar to NVIDIA. The company may prioritize certain RDNA 4 GPU models to mitigate the impact of escalating DRAM sourcing costs. This strategy could center on the more lucrative Radeon RX 9070 XT model, which has historically struggled to maintain its MSRP due to rapid price inflation triggered by DRAM shortages.
The RDNA lineup currently features three models equipped with 16 GB GDDR6 VRAM, making them appealing choices for gamers seeking high-performance options. However, ongoing memory shortages have forced manufacturers, including AMD and NVIDIA, to reconsider their pricing strategies for high-VRAM GPUs. NVIDIA is reportedly concentrating on producing the more profitable 8 GB RTX 50 series while favoring higher-end models with 16 GB VRAM over those with slower specs. Although NVIDIA intends to absorb some of the increased memory costs, adjustments have already been made to their production approach.
This does not make the Radeon RX 9070 a particularly good alternative for manufacturers, and according to our information, while its production will not be halted, the focus is shifting heavily toward the Radeon RX 9070 XT. As a result, more of that model may be produced in the future at the expense of its smaller sibling. On paper, this could help minimize the need for price corrections, since the fastest Radeon model is already more expensive and is therefore less affected by rising memory prices.
– ProHardVer
According to insights from ProHardVer (via Videocardz), AMD seems to be shifting its focus predominantly towards the Radeon RX 9070 XT. This model, which commands a higher price while offering the same memory capacity, provides AMD with more pricing flexibility in light of rising memory costs. Conversely, the RX 9070 has suffered price adjustments much earlier, complicating AMD’s strategies concerning this model.
Furthermore, the RX 9060 XT with 16 GB VRAM currently lacks viable alternatives in AMD’s lineup, underscoring the importance of both the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 XT. AMD has publicly committed to managing costs effectively, but historical trends indicate that manufacturers often prioritize higher profit margins whenever possible.
