The 2026 GDC State of the Game Industry Report has been released, offering a comprehensive look into the current trends in the video game industry, based on insights collected from over 2, 300 professionals in the field. This year’s survey delves into critical issues such as industry layoffs, favored game engines, and the increasingly controversial topic of Generative AI (GenAI).

Generative AI Usage in Game Development

According to the report, while 35% of respondents indicated they do not utilize Generative AI in their roles, a substantial 52% reported that their studios are implementing GenAI tools. This trend has prompted many companies to establish policies governing the use of these technologies. Notably, 15% of participants stated that their organizations lack such policies, whereas 78% affirmed the existence of guidelines related to GenAI. The remaining 7% of respondents expressed uncertainty regarding their company’s stance.

Specificity in Policy Development

The survey unveiled that policy frameworks are becoming increasingly specialized, with 22% of respondents stating that only designated GenAI tools are permissible in their studios. Among the tools used, large language models such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are predominant. Participants highlighted that “research and brainstorming”accounted for the most frequent applications of these technologies. Furthermore, they indicated that daily tasks—including writing emails, coding assistance, and prototyping—continue to be primary uses. A mere 5% employ GenAI for “player-facing features”, while 10% use it for procedural generation and 19% for asset creation.

AI’s Role and Perceptions Among Developers

The necessity for GenAI tools is apparent for many respondents. One executive from an indie studio remarked, “We are a small team, so it is making us capable of achieving more than we would without it.”Nevertheless, despite the growing integration of GenAI, a significant portion of respondents expresses concern about its ramifications. About 52% of those surveyed argue that GenAI is negatively impacting the video game industry—a notable 30% increase from last year’s findings. Even amongst users of GenAI, sentiments vary greatly. A developer from Ukraine expressed, “AI is theft. I have to use it, otherwise I’m gonna get fired.”

What stands out in the report is not just the statistics, but the individual anecdotes shared by developers reflecting varied attitudes toward GenAI tools. Some view these advancements positively, while others harbor strong criticisms.

As the use of Generative AI becomes more prevalent, a growing number of studios are implementing guidelines for its application, though it is noteworthy that many of these technologies do not translate into the gaming experiences we encounter at home.
