Structural Changes in Gaming Revenue, According to Newzoo Report
Today, the market analysis firm Newzoo released a compelling report illustrating notable shifts within the PC and console gaming sectors. While the allure of major AAA titles persists, an increasing amount of both gaming revenue and playtime is being allocated to titles beyond the top 20 ranks. This trend is especially evident in the PC market.
Significant Revenue Redistribution in PC Gaming
The findings reveal a striking statistic: in key Western markets—including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain—games rated 21st and lower were expected to generate 56% of all PC gaming revenue by 2025, a notable rise from 48% in 2022. This suggests that more than half of the financial resources for PC games are directed toward lower-ranked titles, representing a significant change compared to just three years prior. For console platforms, the shift is also occurring, albeit at a slower pace, with titles outside the top 20 comprising 38% of PlayStation revenue and 35% of Xbox revenue by 2025.

Expanding Playtime Trends
The growth in playtime follows a similar narrative. For PC, the share of playtime taken by games ranked outside the top 20 grew from 33% in 2022 to 42% in 2025. Importantly, this isn’t merely a case of time shifting away from the popular games: playtime among these lower-ranked titles surged by 44%, while playtime for the top 20 games remained static, against a backdrop of total PC playtime increasing by 14%. Notably, by 2025, 79 games were needed to account for 80% of total PC playtime, compared to only 52 games in 2022.
Top Games Remain Unchanged
Despite these changes in the broader landscape, the dominance of top-tier games remains strongly entrenched. The leading five PC titles have not changed since 2023, with only Marvel Rivals and Wuthering Waves joining the top 20 in 2025, highlighting the durability of established favorites.

Impact of Genre and Business Models
The report also emphasizes the importance of game genres and business models beyond the top 20. In the PC segment, RPG and Adventure genres capture a significant share of playtime among lower-ranked titles. Prominent examples include Path of Exile 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, as well as enduring classics like Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and the evergreen The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the latter thriving primarily due to its vibrant modding community. Notably, a staggering 73% of PC playtime beyond the top 20 is invested in premium titles, while the leading games mostly thrive within extensive free-to-play ecosystems.

This comprehensive analysis underscores a paradigm shift within the gaming landscape, pushing the narrative that the space beneath blockbuster AAA games is becoming increasingly significant.
