1047 Games’ Last Effort with Splitgate: Arena Reloaded
1047 Games is making a final attempt to revive Splitgate: Arena Reloaded by introducing a new battle royale mode known as Arena Royale. For those unfamiliar, Splitgate: Arena Reloaded is the rebranded version of Splitgate 2, a sequel that faced criticism after the original Splitgate servers were taken offline. The aim of Arena Reloaded is to combine the most appealing elements from both versions of the game, and Arena Royale is designed to merge the essence of battle royale gameplay with the chaos of arena shooters.
Insights from the Design Team
According to Josh Watson, the design director at 1047 Games, the team’s frustrations with traditional battle royale mechanics were pivotal in shaping Arena Royale. Watson emphasizes a design philosophy that focuses on “less looting, more shooting.” He notes that conventional battle royale formats often include long, drawn-out periods of inaction, where players spend excessive time looting, traversing barren landscapes, and waiting for combat opportunities.
“Arena shooters provide the antithesis of that, ”Watson explains.“They emphasize rapid gameplay and immediate engagement. Arena Royale aims to capture the best aspects of both genres.”
Gameplay Mechanics and Features
In Arena Royale, players won’t parachute into the game; instead, they will gather in a lobby prior to each match and vote on their preferred map. This approach fosters a more engaging start to the game. Players will have the chance to fight on four unique maps, referred to as biomes by Watson: Dought, Glacier, Fracture, and a new setting known as Outskirts, which bears a resemblance to the well-known Kings Canyon map from Apex Legends. Drawing inspiration from established favorites can be beneficial when trying to captivate players.
Arena Royale also breaks away from typical battle royale conventions. For example, loot chests open instantly, and when a player is eliminated, their loot drops in a bag rather than requiring rummaging through death boxes. The player count is notably reduced to just 24 players per match, organized into six teams of four, promoting a more intimate and action-packed experience.
Moreover, players won’t encounter buy stations in the game’s biomes. Instead, they can enhance their gear in real-time using resources acquired through damage dealt, kill counts, and various in-game events like Split Ball, Firecracker, and Hot Zone.
Challenges for Splitgate: Arena Reloaded
Despite these innovations, the renaissance of Splitgate since its relaunch has not captured the audience’s attention as hoped. The revival struggled to make a significant impact, as evidenced by the developer’s attempts to counter claims regarding dwindling player numbers on Steam.
The studio’s efforts to spotlight its waning Steam player count did not yield an increase in active users. Although player statistics on Steam don’t tell the complete story, they indicate a lack of traction for Splitgate: Arena Reloaded on that platform. If the game’s status does not improve soon, future announcements from the studio could regretfully involve the potential closure of both the game and the company.
