Introducing Zorin OS 18: A Strong Contender Against Windows
Zorin OS has made waves in the tech community with the launch of its latest update, version 18. This Ubuntu-based operating system positions itself as a friendly alternative to mainstream platforms like Windows and macOS. The recent update emphasizes speed, robustness, security, and a commitment to user privacy, heralding a fresh start for those migrating from Windows 10, which has reached its end of life.
Zorin Group strategically released this update on the same day Microsoft officially phased out Windows 10, capitalizing on the opportunity to attract users who may find themselves without support. The company claims that this shift affects around 240 million computers that do not meet Windows 11’s stringent requirements.
Redesigned Desktop and Enhanced User Experience
The overhaul in Zorin OS 18 includes a revamped desktop environment while maintaining the core aesthetics that users appreciate. The new default theme features a softer, rounded design with a lighter color palette, creating a modern and welcoming interface.

Improved Window Tiling Feature
One of the standout features in Zorin OS 18 is the enhanced window tiling manager. Users can now drag a window to the top of the screen to access a pop-up with predefined layout options—akin to Windows 11’s Snap Layouts. However, Zorin OS takes it a step further by allowing the creation of personalized tiling layouts, providing greater flexibility than Microsoft’s offerings without the need for external utilities.

New Layouts for Versatile Usage
The Pro edition introduces three new desktop layouts. Among them is a configuration reminiscent of Linux Mint, featuring a start menu that enables category navigation through hovering. Users looking to maximize screen real estate can benefit from a compact panel layout, while a minimalist, macOS-like layout, referred to as “elementary OS-like”, caters to fans of simplicity.

New Applications and Educational Tools
Zorin OS 18 Pro also debuts with 11 new pre-installed applications, enhancing productivity:
- Deskflow: Enables sharing of mouse, keyboard, and clipboard across networked computers.
- Warp: A secure tool for file sharing, operating on both local networks and the internet.
- Valot: A user-friendly time tracking application for professionals to log work hours and earnings.
- Easy Effects: A sophisticated audio manipulation suite that includes an equalizer and compressor.
For users of the Education edition, four new applications are introduced:
- Gradebook: An app that helps students track grades across various courses.
- Spedread: A speed-reading utility that presents one word at a time.
- TurboWarp: A programming tool based on Scratch, designed for children with a compiler for efficient project execution.
A noteworthy addition is the new Web Apps tool, allowing users to convert any website into a desktop application. These Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) can be launched directly from the start menu, seamlessly integrating with any commonly used web browser.
Robust Migration Support
Transitioning from Windows 10 to Zorin OS has been made easier with an expanded built-in database that now supports over 170 applications. The OS can detect Windows installers and suggest the most suitable methods to access those applications, be it through a web app or a native Linux version.

Enduring Support and Accessibility
In addition to its robust features, Zorin OS 18 promises long-term support, with regular security patches and software updates available until at least June 2029. Users currently on Zorin OS 17 can easily upgrade through the Software Updater, and those interested can download the Zorin OS 18 ISOs for free here.
