Zoe Saldaña believes Marvel will bear “huge loss” if they don’t bring another Guardians of the Galaxy movie

Despite the end of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Zoe Saldaña is still not ready to say goodbye. In a recent interview with The Playlist, published on April 1, the actress expressed her love for the franchise and advocated for its return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy,’”she said.

Saldaña portrayed the character of Gamora, a green-skinned extraterrestrial killer, in the Guardians movies alongside Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Bradley Cooper, among others. However, with director James Gunn moving to Marvel’s competitor DC Studios, it appeared that the third installment in 2023, Vol. 3, would bring an end to the franchise.

Despite not feeling prepared to reprise her role as Gamora, Zoe Saldaña expressed a desire for the franchise to make a comeback in the future.

The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy made its debut in 2014 and was met with both critical acclaim and commercial success, raking in over $2 billion in box office earnings as a franchise. The team of superheroes became a beloved addition to the MCU and even made appearances in the blockbuster films Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

With the release of its third installment, Vol.3, the film depicted the disbandment of the group as each member ventured off to pursue their own aspirations. However, a scene during the credits hinted at a fresh lineup of Guardians, with Bradley Cooper’s Rocket and Vin Diesel’s Groot remaining as members.

Despite Zoe Saldaña stating her decision to not reprise her role as Gamora, she remained optimistic about the character’s potential future in the MCU.

“I mean, so far, I think that she is [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good,”she said.

Despite not being eager to reprise her role, Saldaña still showed great love for the films and wished for its revival. In the event that it does make a comeback, the 45-year old actress shared that she would rejoice in the cinema. She stated:

“It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing—which is just so marvelous for and very specific for this genre. And it’s so great for this genre as well. So, I would be the first one in the first row to sort of celebrate when the Guardians of the Galaxy come back.”

Similarly, in previous discussions, Dave Bautista, who portrayed Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, shared similar sentiments to Saldaña and stated that he was ready to move on from his role in the franchise. While he expressed interest in taking on new roles within the superhero genre, the Dune: Part Two actor revealed in a February 2024 interview with io9:

“When I said that I was done, I was really just done with my journey as Drax. I still have a relationship with Marvel… I love the universe—the superhero universe, I love it. I’m a fan. So Marvel or DC, if they call, I would answer the phone. And if the role makes sense, I’d be all over it.”He added, “I’m not done with it. But my journey with Drax is over.”

Despite Marvel not announcing any plans for a new Guardians of the Galaxy project at this time, Zoe Saldaña continues to be a part of two other highly successful franchises: James Cameron’s Avatar film series and Paramount’s Star Trek films.

Even as the third and fourth Avatar movies are being produced, a fifth installment is planned for the future. Additionally, the development of the fourth and last Star Trek film is also underway.

Zoe Saldaña has been confirmed to star in the highly anticipated thriller, The Absence of Eden, scheduled for a theatrical release on April 12, 2024.
