Former LABOUM Member Yulhee Takes Legal Action Against Choi Min-hwan
Recently, Yulhee, a former member of the girl group LABOUM, has stirred public interest by filing a legal case against Choi Min-hwan, a member of the band FTISLAND. This legal move is primarily aimed at securing custody of their children amid allegations surrounding Choi Min-hwan’s involvement in adult entertainment activities. The couple’s relationship gained publicity in September 2017 when they began dating, as confirmed by FNC Entertainment. By November of that year, Yulhee had exited LABOUM, a move that coincided with her budding romance.
Marriage and Family Life
In January 2018, Choi Min-hwan announced his marriage to Yulhee via an Instagram post, shortly followed by the revelation of Yulhee’s pregnancy in May. FNC Entertainment confirmed their legal marriage and stated that they would hold a wedding ceremony once Yulhee had recovered from childbirth. Their son, Choi Jae-yul, was born on May 28, 2018, and the couple celebrated their wedding on October 19, 2018, surrounded by close family and friends.
Later that year, in December, they became regular cast members on the KBS2 reality show “Mr. House Husband,”showcasing their family life. By August 2019, during another episode, the couple joyfully announced Yulhee’s pregnancy with twins. Choi Min-hwan later confirmed the arrival of their twin daughters, Choi Ah-yoon and Choi A-rin, on February 11, 2020. After the birth of their daughters, the family left the show as Choi Min-hwan enlisted in military service.
Divorce and Allegations
After completing his military service and being discharged in September 2021, the couple appeared to build their lives together until December 4, 2023, when both Yulhee and Choi Min-hwan posted on Instagram, announcing their divorce.
On October 25, following the divorce announcement, Yulhee released a YouTube video that featured alleged audio recordings purportedly implicating Choi Min-hwan in using adult entertainment services during their marriage. In light of these serious allegations, FNC Entertainment declared that Choi Min-hwan would suspend all media engagements and activities with FTISLAND, and he would also step down from his role on the show “The Return of Superman,”where he had appeared with their children.
Legal Proceedings and Custody Battle
Reports from the Korea JoongAng Daily indicate that on November 4, Yulhee sought legal changes regarding custody and alimony, claiming that critical discussions had not taken place during their 2023 divorce proceedings. Currently, Choi Min-hwan holds custody of all three children, but there is talk that custody could eventually be adjusted as Yulhee strives for financial stability to support them.
In a candid moment on “Now I’m Alone,”a TV Chosun Show, Yulhee expressed her reluctance to reveal her ex-husband’s alleged wrongdoings but felt pressured by unkind reactions from netizens towards mothers. She articulated her struggle, saying:
“I was upset that people’s image of me was different from my actual life as a mother. That’s why I decided to appear on ‘I’m Alone Now’. I wanted to say that I have never abandoned my children. I still didn’t want to talk about it. I really didn’t want to reveal it. More than anyone else.”
Conclusion
The marriage between Yulhee and Choi Min-hwan, which lasted for five years and officially ended in 2023, is now the subject of legal scrutiny. According to The Straits Times, the Gangnam Police Station has initiated an internal investigation concerning Choi Min-hwan based on allegations under the Act on the Punishment of Arrangement of Commercial Sex Acts.
