YouTube Music introduces the capability for users to create AI-generated artwork to use as playlist thumbnails. However, the platform has yet to provide an option for users to upload their personalized images for playlists. On the other hand, its parent platform, YouTube, does allow this feature, which seems to be slowly becoming available to YouTube Music users as well.
A Reddit user known as SimSamurai13 posted a video demonstrating how the audio streaming service has introduced a feature that permits users to upload custom playlist thumbnails. The user noticed a new pencil icon situated in the bottom-right corner of the playlist artwork while using the web interface of YouTube Music.
Selecting the pencil icon reveals two options: “Choose from library”and “Remove custom image.”Upon clicking “Choose from library,”users can pick an image from their computer and crop it appropriately to serve as the thumbnail. Once completed, the playlist page refreshes in a few seconds to display the newly uploaded thumbnail.
While the option to generate AI artwork for a YouTube Music playlist thumbnail is a valuable feature, it may not suit everyone’s taste. If a user opts to remove the thumbnail without any AI-generated images, YouTube Music will revert to displaying a 2×2 collage of the playlist’s album covers. Many users appreciate a personalized touch on their playlists, making this upcoming feature a welcome enhancement for them.
Currently, the custom thumbnail feature is available to only a select group of users, and there hasn’t been any official announcement from YouTube regarding a broader rollout. Additionally, this feature is currently limited to the web version of the streaming service. At this moment, it’s uncertain whether the option to use a custom image is available for the Liked Music playlist, given that the AI generation feature does not function in that space.
