The latest episode of The Great British Bake Off premiered on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Titled “Caramel Week,”this episode marked the exit of Mike Wilkins, who became the fourth contestant eliminated from the competition.
In this installment, the remaining nine bakers battled it out for the coveted title of Star Baker. Contestants faced three challenges — Signature, Technical, and Showstopper — each aimed at impressing the judges and avoiding elimination.
Following a thrilling contest, Georgie Grasso earned the title of Star Baker, while Mike faced unfortunate elimination. As the episode drew to a close, host Noel Fielding revealed that Mike would be leaving the tent.
Fans of The Great British Bake Off took to X to share their thoughts on Mike’s departure. While numerous viewers expressed their sadness over his exit, others highlighted the humor and charm he brought to the show.
“NOOOOOOOOO not my Mike keep on baking Mike!!! You’ll be missed,”a fan tweeted.
“Would still die for Mike and his infectious laugh,”another user commented.
The response from The Great British Bake Off audience showed discontent regarding the elimination decision. Some viewers voiced their concerns that the eviction process seemed biased.
“I’m sorry what?! Definitely feels like playing favourites – surely the decision of who goes should be based solely off that week’s challenges not ‘who is going to do better going forward’,”one user reacted.
“The tent said goodbye to the absolute icon today, @mikesqw everyone loves you soooooo much,”a viewer commented.
“Have we reached the point where we have to sacrifice Mike to keep Nelly? I’m not happy,”another fan tweeted.
“Noooooo! I shall miss Mike!”one more fan chimed in.
Simultaneously, many Bake Off enthusiasts praised Mike’s characteristics and expressed disappointment about his departure from the competition.
“Mike has been the source of ALL the original humour on #GBBO this year. From ‘it looks a bit pollocks’ to ‘I’m going to come out now. I’m gay’,”one user tweeted.
“Absolutely loved watching Mike. Lovely guy with a mischievous and hilarious sense of humour. On the plus side he’ll be hilarious on Extra Slice with Jo Brand and Tom Allen,”another viewer reacted.
“Sad Mike has gone. He was a lovely addition to the tent. I found the way he laughed at his own jokes all the time quite endearing,”said another netizen.
How Did Mike Get Eliminated from The Great British Bake Off?
During the Signature round in episode 4, contestants were asked to create caramel biscuits, either inspired by classic recipes or entirely new creations that emphasized caramel flavor.
Mike opted to prepare “Dad’s Favorite”caramel biscuits adorned with flowers from his own farm. Although the judges praised the flavor, they noted issues with the biscuits’ “bulging”shape.
In the Technical round, Judge Prue Leith tasked the bakers with crafting a crisp and flaky pear tart tatin, paired with a walnut caramel ice cream. This two-part challenge proved difficult for many, demanding precise “timing and temperature.”While Georgie excelled, Mike ended up in seventh position among the competitors.
For the final Showstopper round, bakers were required to assemble a caramel mousse cake, showcasing “spectacular sugar work”with at least two caramel variations.
Mike presented a coffee popcorn mousse cake, inspired by one of his favorite beverages. While the presentation was appealing, Judge Prue commented on the insufficient amount of mousse in the cake.
“A mousse cake should be at least half mousse,”she remarked.
Following a disappointing performance in the last round, the judges decided to eliminate Mike. During a confessional, the evicted contestant shared his feelings about leaving.
“I’m just a little farmhand who does a bit of baking in the kitchen. Everybody else was so incredible. I feel like the quality of what everyone else is doing is just breathtaking. I’m going to miss everyone,”Mike reflected.
The Great British Bake Off will air its next episode in the UK on October 22, 2024, at 8 pm.
