‘Yellowstone’ and ‘1923’: The Characters’ Struggles and Alex’s Turmoil

Television dramas like Yellowstone and its recent spinoff, 1923, often challenge viewers to willingly set aside their realism. While I seriously doubt John Dutton could evade justice for the numerous grave acts committed in his name, the allure of the series captivates us, and we suspend disbelief accordingly.

In this spirit, I find myself pleading for a moment of respite for Alex (played by Julia Schlapefer) in 1923. Just one episode where she can catch her breath and find some peace. Can we grant her that one small favor for the sake of her well-being—and mine?

Since the season began, Alex has faced relentless hardships. At the end of Season 1, she and her husband, Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), were torn apart. Season 2 introduced their independent journeys with the hope of reuniting in Montana. Spencer embarked on his trek to America, while Alex, navigating her own tumultuous path, discovered she was pregnant and chose to escape her family’s oppressive grasp.

As the Duttons battled the harsh elements of their environment—wrestling with cold temperatures, cougars, and wolves—Alex grappled with far more sinister human interactions. She endured a harrowing boat journey to Ellis Island, where she was subjected to mistreatment by doctors. Following a difficult arrival in New York’s Grand Central Station, she experienced a mugging that robbed her of the funds needed for her journey eastward. To survive, she took a job working on trains headed toward Montana.

Amidst her efforts to serve passengers, a man assaulted her. Fortunately, two British patrons—who initially ridiculed American women’s reputation for desiring “rough” men—came to her rescue, preventing her from facing legal consequences. If you thought her trials ended there, you’d be mistaken. The routes she relied on became less accessible, but those same British allies began to support her once more after realizing they shared a common heritage.

Now that you’re up to speed with Alex’s tumultuous season, don’t you feel she deserves a moment of relief?

I Just Want Alex to Reunite with Spencer

The separation of Alex and Spencer at the close of Season 1 hinted at an impending crisis for the couple. Yet, the idea that those who endure hardships together might strengthen their bond rings true, right? Joking aside, their saga has become a centerpiece of the series, showcasing a deep, “epic” love story. Witnessing the myriad challenges Alex has faced in her quest to reunite with Spencer can be emotionally taxing.

Of course, Spencer has not been without his struggles. He brushed against death aboard a train, witnessed a friend perish, and grappled with law enforcement that failed to believe his account. Like Alex, he has endured his share of trials.

These experiences are sure to amplify the emotional intensity of their eventual reunion in Montana. However, until that moment arrives, I have a fervent request: please allow Alex some relief. While I anticipate she will confront further adversities, wouldn’t a brief respite enable her to regain her strength?

Furthermore, I worry about the potential motives of those British patrons, who previously held disparaging views about American women. Are they scheming to send Alex back to her family? The thought of revisiting her struggle to immigrate is unbearable. We simply need her to reunite with Spencer—my romantic side can’t handle another setback!
