X-Men: The Fulfillment of Professor Xavier’s Dream and Its Implications for the Future

I want to express my genuine admiration for the X-Men. I have always believed in Charles Xavier’s vision of a future where humanity and mutantkind coexist in harmony. However, the recent events of the Krakoa Saga have compelled Xavier to adjust his ideals to accommodate a world steeped in animosity. With Xavier’s dream seemingly extinguished alongside Krakoa, one mutant collective is demonstrating that such harmony is indeed achievable.

While the other X-Men teams grapple with monumental threats, engaging in internecine disputes, and laying the groundwork for a
new School for Gifted Youngsters, Ms. Marvel and her allies are fostering something grander than themselves. In
NYX #7, crafted by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Enid Balám, Marvel unveils a transformative take on the series’ identity.

Initially a moniker for a ghetto primarily inhabited by mutants known as District X, “NYX” has evolved into a vibrant community where both mutants and humans can thrive. This represents a significant step towards realizing Xavier’s dream, albeit at a localized level.

NYX: A Thriving Community of Mutants and Humans

What distinguishes the NYX series from other ongoing X-Men narratives is its community-centric focus. While many X-Men titles confront widespread threats, those within the NYX community are tackling challenges that emphasize the importance of “community.” Their mission revolves around the daily experiences of mutants who lack access to luxurious residences like mansions or private islands—a poignant reminder that Xavier’s dream can materialize in tangible, meaningful ways.

Unlike Xavier and Magneto’s factions, NYX embodies a novel approach to fostering relations between humans and mutants centered on peace. Despite facing hostility from bigoted individuals, the NYX community remains steadfast, refusing to succumb to the violence that others anticipate from mutants. They are rapidly becoming a dynamic hub where creatures of all kinds unite to contribute their skills for the common good. NYX is effectively achieving
what Xavier struggled to accomplish by dismantling the fictitious divide between humans and mutants. NYX is inclusive for all.

The question arises: why has NYX succeeded where Xavier’s aspirations have repeatedly faltered? I believe the answer lies in the concepts of scale and integration. NYX chooses to engage deeply with its local community, drawing parallels to real-life scenarios where neighborhood dynamics often wield more influence than larger societal shifts.
Xavier and Magneto, particularly throughout the Krakoa Saga, aimed for sweeping transformations. But their approaches inadvertently instilled fear in the populace.

Though I do not fault Xavier for crafting a sanctuary for mutants, his decision to segregate them from the broader community rendered it easier for humans to perceive mutants as “the others.” As a professionally trained sociologist, I can attest that segregation often exacerbates divisions. In contrast, the mutants of NYX are unequivocally present, actively broadening their reach to support anyone in need, actively dismantling the fears that often accompany segregation.

NYX: Bridging the Gap Between Mutants and Humans

Smaller Communities Foster Mutual Support

So, what lies ahead for NYX? At present, its localized focus contributes to its success in addressing urgent challenges. Smaller communities tend to adopt a self-reliant mindset, enhancing their resilience. Other X-Men teams can learn from NYX’s principles and apply them in their respective areas. If
the X-Men in regions like Alaska, Louisiana, and Illinois forge robust communal ties akin to those in NYX, this could catalyze a newfound wave of understanding and acceptance.

A significant hurdle remains, however: the tendency of the X-Men to resist adopting such successful strategies. I fully grasp the fear that supersedes their lives in light of possible violence and persecution. Nevertheless, NYX exemplifies effective grassroots organization, emphasizing unity and the breakdown of misconceptions. Critics of NYX, including Synch in this issue, are beginning to recognize a vital truth:
Xavier’s dream is attainable. The real issue wasn’t the dream itself but rather the methods employed to realize it.

The X-Men can take comfort in knowing that their former leader’s vision remains alive and vibrant. Despite past transgressions, Xavier’s aspirations flourish in the hands of the younger generation, who actively seek alternatives to antiquated practices.
Young mutants are eager to forge new paths, prioritizing the establishment of peace between mutants and humans. They are
adopting the positive aspects of Krakoan and Arakki societies while inviting humanity to participate in the evolving culture. Although inevitable comic book conflicts may disrupt this tranquility in the future, the
X-Men can genuinely celebrate the revival of Xavier’s dream.
