Overview
- A number of Xbox users are experiencing indefinite account bans due to the utilization of VPNs for exploiting regional pricing.
- While Microsoft has not officially prohibited the use of VPNs, it appears to be tightening enforcement against users who misuse them for discounts.
Recent reports indicate that several Xbox users are facing indefinite bans after purchasing games through virtual private networks (VPNs).This alarming trend has sparked discussions among the community, prompting calls for Microsoft to clarify its policies regarding VPN usage in the Xbox Store.
VPNs serve legitimate purposes, such as bypassing ISP throttling and safeguarding users’ privacy. However, leveraging them to take advantage of price discrepancies between regions violates the terms of service of many online retailers, including Microsoft’s Xbox Store.
Microsoft’s Stance on VPN Use
Another individual, @Alex_Gezonex, who was permanently banned for the same issue, has now been reinstated (attachment).I want to stress that, contrary to the email’s claims, the Xbox Community Standards do not prohibit this practice – the rule cited is essentially fabricated.pic.twitter.com/D08mRWJsI0 — Rho (@rho_tter) March 5, 2025
In a recent case from March 2025, Twitter user Rho_tter shared their experience of having a Microsoft account banned for utilizing a VPN to switch their Xbox Store region to Argentina. The correspondence they received indicated that the ban stemmed from exploiting significant regional price variations through foreign storefronts. Interestingly, the email noted that VPN usage itself is not banned; however, Rho_tter pointed out that even the act of taking advantage of cheaper regional pricing is not explicitly outlined as a violation in the Xbox Community Standards, dubbing the cited regulation as “fabricated.”

Supporting Rho_tter’s assertion, Game Rant discovered that the latest revisions of the Xbox Community Standards for the United States—last updated in May 2024—do not mention VPNs. The Xbox Store’s multitude of regional iterations are governed by specific guidelines, each communicated in the respective local languages.
Rho_tter acknowledged a prolonged period of VPN usage, having spoofed their location to access the Argentinian Xbox Store since November 2023. Another user, Alex_Gezonex, reportedly had their account reinstated swiftly after facing a similar ban. The full scope of this crackdown remains largely unclear; however, it has incited calls among users for Microsoft to provide clearer guidelines surrounding the acceptable use of VPNs. This scrutiny comes on the heels of previous debates regarding Microsoft’s practices—specifically concerning the recent overturning of Microsoft Rewards account suspensions in January 2025.
