International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples: Spotlight on Gaming
On August 9, the world celebrates the International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples, and this year, Microsoft is taking notable steps to amplify Indigenous voices in the gaming industry. Xbox has unveiled a remarkable collection of video games crafted by Indigenous developers and storytellers, emphasizing authentic narratives and cultural representation.
Introducing the ‘Shadow’ Campaign
One of the standout elements of this initiative is the new campaign storyline titled ‘Shadow’ for Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition
. Penned by Anthony Brave, a cultural expert from the Sicangu Oyate and Chippewa-Cree heritage, this storyline is designed to reflect a genuine Indigenous perspective. Brave’s involvement plays a crucial role in ensuring “accurate, nuanced, and deeply respectful”representation, allowing players to experience the game through the eyes of an Indigenous protagonist.
A Shift Towards Authenticity
This initiative addresses the historical shortcomings that have long plagued game representations of Indigenous cultures. By collaborating with Indigenous creators, Microsoft aims to set a new standard in game development—one that prioritizes cultural consultation and integrity. The aim is to tell “authentic stories that reclaim historical narratives and imagine empowered futures, rooted in tradition and lived experiences.”
Diverse Gaming Collection
In addition to the ‘Shadow’ campaign, Xbox has curated an impressive lineup of games that celebrate Indigenous creators. Titles such as Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Aztech: Forgotten Gods, Carto, and Aritana and the Harpy’s Feather showcase how Indigenous perspectives have influenced and enriched the gaming landscape.
Support for Indigenous Communities
To further the engagement, Xbox is enabling gamers in the United States to earn and donate points to organizations that support Indigenous communities. Through the Rewards Hub, players can contribute to two prominent organizations: AISES, which focuses on increasing the representation of Indigenous individuals in STEM fields, and the First Nations Development Institute, which is dedicated to uplifting the economies and cultural traditions of Native communities.
Exclusive Celebratory Features
For players looking to honor this special day visually, Xbox has released a new wallpaper and dynamic background to enhance their gaming experience. These features provide a unique way to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous peoples.
As Microsoft and Xbox continue to pave the way for more inclusive storytelling in gaming, initiatives like these mark a significant step toward honoring Indigenous cultures and narratives.
