WWE has plans for new star to be pushed at Gunther’s level – Reports

As WrestleMania XL approaches its final week, WWE’s Road to WrestleMania is coming to a close. Fans are eagerly speculating about which wrestler will receive a major push after the event, and one top star has emerged as a top contender.

Ilja Dragunov became the NXT Champion by defeating Carmelo Hayes at No Mercy in September 2023 and is currently in his first reign. He has a scheduled title defense against Tony D’Angelo at NXT Stand And Deliver 2024 during WrestleMania XL weekend.

According to Fightful, there are currently no plans for The Mad Dragon to be called up to the main roster after WrestleMania. However, sources in NXT have stated that he is likely to move up to the main roster after relinquishing his title, as many feel that Dragunov has outgrown the brand at this stage in his career.

According to reports, WWE officials have intentions to promote Dragunov in a manner comparable to his long-standing rival Gunther. Sources in NXT have revealed that officials view the 30-year-old in a similar light as the current Intercontinental Champion, potentially resulting in a similar push upon Dragunov’s move to the main roster.

Dragunov’s skills and professionalism in NXT have earned him constant praise, with producers remarking that he requires minimal direction. Among the current roster, this was said to be a trait unique to the Russian wrestler. An NXT source specifically commended Dragunov for his ability to elevate his opponents in the ring, and described him as incredibly easy to work with. The source also noted his impressive understanding of the pro wrestling business and his overall positive attitude, stating that he is a pleasure to be around.

Despite speculation that Dragunov may decline a call-up due to the frequent trips back home to see family, it has been reported that this is not the case. According to WWE officials, they are more than willing to accommodate his schedule.
