In the captivating world of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, one of the most memorable NPCs you will meet is Zhao Yun, famously known as the White-Robed Elder. This formidable warrior presents an intriguing mix of menace and mentorship as he often provides stern warnings about the dangers of the Feathering outbreak.
Despite his fearsome demeanor, Zhao Yun serves as a recurring ally throughout your adventure, often found amidst the aftermath of combat, surrounded by defeated monsters. This comprehensive guide delves into Zhao Yun’s questline in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, detailing his locations within the world and the rewards you can earn by engaging with him.
Starting Zhao Yun’s Quest
To initiate Zhao Yun’s quest, simply converse with him on the second floor of the Shu Sanctum, positioned near the old lady who is praying at a shrine.
Upon your first encounter, Zhao Yun will be asleep, but he’ll soon awaken. He expresses surprise at your sanity in light of the Feathering crisis, threatening your life if you fall victim to it. While the interaction may feel unsettling, it’s essential to keep moving forward in the game.
As you progress through your journey, expect to encounter him again in various regions. If you ever lose track of his whereabouts, use the shrine’s Teleport option to check which NPCs have quest interactions available nearby.
Zhao Yun’s Locations
Doomwillow Beach
Your next encounter with Zhao Yun occurs at Doomwillow Beach. Upon your entrance to this eerie, ash-laden landscape, turn away from the shrine and proceed up the road, veering right.
As you navigate this path, take the left option at the fork to find him looming over some monster corpses. Engage him in conversation, where his menacing demeanor continues as he reiterates his intent to kill you should you succumb to your humanity’s decline.
However, after this encounter, he graciously provides a Crystallized Red Mercury as a parting gift.
Cloudspire Outskirts
The journey continues at the Cloudspire Outskirts, where you’ll find Zhao Yun on the scaffolding of a beacon tower that must be ignited to facilitate the drawbridge access to Cloudspire City, especially if avoiding a confrontation with the North General.
His exact location is right beside the Cloudspire Outskirts shrine. Keep an eye out for mine traps as you climb the tower. Upon reaching him, he appears to be grappling with an identity crisis, expressing his thoughts before once again threatening your life and entrusting you with a Glistening Red Mercury.
Battlefield Pass
After clearing Cloudspire and Snowfall and vanquishing the Perfect Bride, your next destination is Mt. Zhenwu via the Battlefield Pass.
While traversing through this path, a split will occur, leading you to hear Zhao Yun engaged in combat.Head right; this will direct you to a dead end where he awaits.
Speak to him, and you’ll receive a Brilliant Red Feather, along with an invitation to meet him at the Refugee Camp.
Refugee Camp
Upon arriving at the Refugee Camp, you’ll reunite with Zhao Yun, who will be stationed next to a ladder, seeking your assistance.
He requests your help to eliminate a beast pursuing him, asking you to meet in the forest afterward. Engage fully in the dialogue before you descend the ladder to explore the lush landscapes of Avian Marsh.
Avian Marsh/Dwelling
The Avian Marsh is a labyrinth of twisting paths rife with aggressive creatures, making navigation a challenge.
However, progressing through this area is relatively straightforward; the key is to ascend. You will traverse a cave filled with bird-like foes, coffin monsters, and lotus adversaries, all of which can dramatically raise your Despair gauge, potentially leading to instant demise. Equip armor like the White Specter or Delicate set to boost Despair resistance.
Upon exiting the cave, you’ll encounter Zhao Yun again, albeit in a more distressed state. He warns that the beast he previously mentioned is nearby, reaffirming his commitment to battle it to the end.
Continue to navigate the verdant territory, and make sure to topple a few trees to build a makeshift bridge leading to the Avian Dwelling shrine.
Confronting the Bo Sorcerer
To move forward in Zhao Yun’s questline, you need to defeat the Bo Sorcerer, a challenging boss characterized by her deadly long blade and potent spells.
While it remains uncertain whether you must summon Zhao Yun for advancing his storyline, it is advisable to do so using your Bone Whistle. This will allow him to draw agro from the boss and create opportunities for damaging strikes.
Once you triumph over the Bo Sorcerer, Zhao Yun will express sorrow for his fallen comrades before disappearing from sight.
Locating Zhao Yun
Although Zhao Yun is still accessible via the Teleport menu in Avian Dwelling, you might find him elusive at this point.
I faced a similar challenge in locating him until I discovered an unexplored section known as the Tomb. This area is subtly positioned near the Avian Dwelling shrine. From there, take a left onto a multitude of fallen trees, sprint past hiding men, and shift left once more to find a thick branch leading to your next destination.
Traverse across the branch to reach a secluded nook that opens into a vast area suggesting an upcoming boss fight. Do not worry, that encounter is not imminent.
At the far end of this clearing, you’ll find Zhao Yun, lost in contemplation. Speak with him to conclude his questline and receive the Tigraliz Pendant.
The Eternal Glory Boss Showdown
Yes, the anticipated boss battle with Zhao Yun occurs, but this climactic challenge awaits until you reach Chapter 5 during the endgame.
Make sure you’ve previously defeated the Dragon Emperor and unlocked access to the Bo Capital region. After that, return to the Tomb, where you will find Zhao Yun awaiting your presence.
