As you progress through WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, you’ve likely faced various challenges in Cloudspire, including numerous encounters with landmines and explosive archers. Now, you must confront the formidable Ming General Liu Cheng’en. Although this boss can be quite difficult, our guide aims to equip you with strategies to defeat him effectively, minimizing the number of your own defeats along the way.
Ming General Liu Cheng’en is known for his agility, spear attacks, and Frostbite damage. However, if you’re already successful in defeating Commander Honglan, you’ll find that Liu Cheng’en may not pose an insurmountable challenge—provided you have the right approach and build. Below is our comprehensive WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers guide to defeating Liu Cheng’en.
Boss Guide for Liu Cheng’en in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers
Defeating Ming General Liu Cheng’en requires you to be well-prepared for a challenging encounter. If you have already triumphed over Commander Honglan, the fight against Liu Cheng’en may be less daunting, contingent on your chosen character build.
Players utilizing agile weapons such as Longswords, One-Handed Swords, or Dual Blades will have an advantage in this encounter compared to those wielding slower weapons like Spears or Axes. While I personally prefer using a halberd, it might be beneficial to temporarily switch to quicker options for this battle. The respec feature, which allows for quick character adjustments, is free and encourages you to experiment with different strategies!
This guide will explore Liu Cheng’en’s moves, his attacking patterns, and recommend effective strategies as well as weapon choices to prevail against him.
Understanding Liu Cheng’en’s Moveset
To begin with, Liu Cheng’en’s attacks can inflict Frostbite damage, so it’s advisable to consume a Spicy Soup or any other items that enhance Frostbite resistance before entering the battle. While accumulating Frostbite isn’t catastrophic, you should keep an eye on your stamina to avoid being overwhelmed.
In the initial phase of the fight, Liu Cheng’en will initiate the battle by lunging at you with his spear, executing a series of three downward thrusts. Successfully dodging these will grant you three stacks of Skyborn Might, which can be utilized for powerful attacks or spellcasting—allowing for strategic advantages!
The lunge attack occurs frequently, and once he completes the sequence, you’ll have a prime opportunity to strike him from behind, especially if you’re playing a melee-focused character. This might enable you to initiate an Obliterate Strike, which is vital for dealing significant damage and building up his Obliterate Value.

Aside from his thrusts, Liu Cheng’en employs multiple spinning sweep attacks with his spear and a damaging stomp that can stagger you if it hits. Dodging sideways or backwards is crucial when he prepares these moves.
Beware of his rapid stab attack, where he thrusts his spear repeatedly. If you can sidestep this assault, it presents an excellent chance to counterattack; however, be wary of getting caught, as it could result in a series of stabs that might finish you off if your health is low.
At intervals, Liu Cheng’en will pause to create a Frost cloud around him using his spear. This is a perfect chance for you to heal or use consumables, and if you’re a magic user, you can safely cast spells while he gathers his Frost attack.
Upon reaching about half of his health, Liu Cheng’en transitions into the second phase. During this stage, he switches to a longsword but maintains his aggressive combat style. He continues performing sweeping attacks, and players should still focus on dodging or using Clash and Deflect tactics.
In this phase, he will also implement stabbing attacks with his sword and conjure Frost clouds similar to the first phase. Players should remain cautious and take the opportunity to heal when he is stationary. Remember that he can summon projectiles imbued with Frost, akin to the throwing daggers used by Commander Honglan. Dodging to the side will help mitigate damage from these attacks.

Effective Strategies for Defeating Liu Cheng’en
Several strategies can be adopted to overcome Ming General Liu Cheng’en, largely dependent on your build preferences and playstyle.
Parrying and Counterattacking
One effective method is to parry Liu Cheng’en’s strikes consistently. You can utilize the Sword Counter Discipline with a Longsword or employ the Clash and Deflect mechanic with other weapons – I favor using Dual Blades and Axes for this purpose.
Be sure to unlock particular Skill Nodes in the Impetus Repository to enhance your ability to Clash and Deflect. Each weapon type has unique nodes and methods for parrying Liu Cheng’en’s attacks, which can take practice to master.
Maximizing Obliterate Strikes
Liu Cheng’en, being a humanoid boss, can be Obliterated relatively easily. Obliterate Strikes function as critical hits, allowing you to inflict substantial damage while also providing options to heal or consume items during the process. Focus on building up his Obliterate Value through consistent attacks, especially taking advantage of openings found in his triple plunge combos.
Utilizing Magic and Evasive Techniques
If you prefer a magic-centric playstyle, consider combining the Darkfrost Edge One-Handed Sword with the Evasive Maneuver skill. This build effectively enhances your survival rate against fast-moving adversaries, as Evasive Maneuver will automatically dodge the next attack after an initial side-dodge, all while recharging your Skyborn Might.
For Liu Cheng’en, pairing this build with strong damage-dealing spells such as Burning Flames can prove effective. Burning Flames not only grants a backward dodge when cast but also offers defensive benefits when activated.
Rewards for Defeating Liu Cheng’en
Upon successful defeat of Ming General Liu Cheng’en, players will obtain the Wooden Strip, which can be given to Merchant Tao Qing to expand his inventory. You’ll also receive the Echo of Liu Cheng’en Spell and advance into the Snowfall Palace.
