WTA rankings update: Danielle Collins returns to Top 30 after Miami triumph, Iga Swiatek starts 97th week as World No. 1
Danielle Collins climbed back into the top 30 of the WTA rankings after her victory at Miami last week. Her impressive performance caused her to rise 31 spots, securing the 22nd position and closely trailing Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova by a single point.
Despite facing tough competition, current World No. 1 Iga Swiatek proved her determination as she dominated the 2024 Indian Wells tournament to claim the title. With a lead of 2,790 points, the four-time Grand Slam winner has now created a comfortable gap between herself and Aryna Sabalenka, giving her some much-needed room to prepare for the upcoming clay court season.
The noteworthy changes in the most recent update of the WTA rankings will now be examined.
Danielle Collins, a former World No. 7, shocked the tennis community with her impressive performance at the 2024 Miami Open on her home turf. She not only secured the biggest title of her career, but also earned 1000 points in the WTA rankings. Back in January, the American had revealed her plans to retire at the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek will be looking to solidify her ranking at the top of the clay court circuit. Given her impressive performance on clay and the significant number of points available in the upcoming months, her closest competitors Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will need to consistently excel in order to catch up to Swiatek and challenge for the No. 1 spot.
Rising Stars in the WTA Rankings: Maria Sakkari and Ekaterina Alexandrova’s Impressive Performances
Despite her critics, Maria Sakkari proved her exceptional abilities on the USA hardcourt swing, sending a clear message with her outstanding results.
In pursuit of making a significant impression on the tour, Sakkari achieved victories over Caroline Garcia, Emma Navarro, and Coco Gauff, resulting in a second-place finish at the 2024 Indian Wells. She also advanced to the quarterfinals at the Miami Open, where she was ultimately defeated by Elena Rybakina. As a result of her impressive performances, the Greek tennis player rose to the seventh position in the most recent WTA rankings.
Thanks to her performance in the 2024 Miami Open, Ekaterina Alexandrova has advanced to the top 15 in the world rankings. With a semifinal finish, the Russian has earned 2,650 points and is steadily gaining ground on her competitors Jasmine Paolini, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Daria Kasatkina.
In the latest WTA rankings, Victoria Azarenka rose six spots to 26th place, while Katie Boulter advanced to the 28th position, among other players on tour.
