World of Warcraft: Midnight Revealed at Gamescom 2025
Blizzard Entertainment showcased the breathtaking cinematic trailer for World of Warcraft: Midnight during the Opening Night Live event at Gamescom 2025. As the eleventh expansion in the acclaimed MMORPG’s history, it continues the thrilling Worldsoul Saga following the previous installment, The War Within. With a dedicated player base still thriving after 21 years, fans are eager to delve deeper into what this new expansion has to offer.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Paul Kubit, Associate Game Director, and Jade Martin, Lead Combat Systems Designer, who provided valuable insights into the key features of World of Warcraft: Midnight.
Distinct Features of World of Warcraft: Midnight
Paul Kubit: One standout feature is the introduction of a housing system, a significant shift from the previous expansion. Players will now have a new avenue to express creativity and foster community by customizing their own spaces. This feature aims to enhance social interaction among players, allowing them to build collections and create neighborhoods that reflect their personal style.
Additionally, this expansion introduces the Prey system, adding layers of complexity to gameplay. Unlike The War Within, which focused primarily on introducing fresh landscapes, Midnight will incorporate revisited areas, including the nostalgic Zul’Aman. Gamers can expect new quests and experiences as they explore the evolution of these cherished locations.
New Systems and Rewards
Jade Martin: The Prey system revolutionizes the questing experience. Players can now set their own challenge levels, increasing the engagement and satisfaction of hunting for their objectives.
Paul Kubit: As players progress through the Prey system, they can unlock a significant variety of rewards, both cosmetic and power-based. The scale will be comparable to challenges in high-level delves, particularly in modes like Hard and Nightmare, where players can genuinely test their skills.
Playing Styles and Group Dynamics
Paul Kubit: In Normal mode, players can team up freely, accepting quests individually but joining forces for the hunt. However, in Hard and Nightmare modes, players will face off in one-on-one encounters, amplifying the tension and excitement.
Introducing the Devourer Demon Hunter
Jade Martin: Another thrilling addition is the Devourer Demon Hunter, which utilizes Void magic in place of Fel magic, marking the introduction of a mid-range DPS specialization. Players will strategically build Void Fragments to maximize their potential in battle, mastering the art of Void Metamorphosis.
Players can choose various playstyles, striking a balance between ranged and melee combat while leveraging the unique mechanics of each build.
Revisiting Classic Regions and Narratives
Paul Kubit: Updating classic zones like Eversong Woods presents its challenges. We aim to honor the nostalgia while enhancing aesthetics and gameplay mechanics, ensuring beloved landmarks retain their charm while incorporating modern graphics. Notably, areas like the Dead Scar are now transformed, representing the evolving storyline of the Blood Elves.
New Allied Race: The Haranir
Paul Kubit: Players will be introduced to the Haranir, a cautious race initially resistant to outside cultures. Their story arc stretches across the new expansion as they confront the looming threat of Xal’atath.
Exciting PvP Developments
Jade Martin: World of Warcraft: Midnight will include the new Voidstorm PvP zone, rich with opportunities for faction contention and exciting terrain dynamics. In addition, the multi-stage Slayer’s Rise Battleground offers both competitive and strategic elements for players to explore.
Paul Kubit: We recognize the passion within the PvP community and aim to further develop this aspect of gameplay. Our new Training Grounds mode will allow players to practice in a less stressful environment, encouraging player growth without the competitive pressures while also offering rewards.
Long-Awaited Housing System
Paul Kubit: After years of player requests, we’re excited to introduce a housing system that facilitates self-expression and community engagement. Players can collect decor not only from new zones but also from past expansions, using advanced tools to customize their homes creatively.
For those seeking to showcase their achievements, players can acquire unique trophies, like boss heads, to display proudly in their homes. The system is designed to adapt and grow over time, offering a lasting, evolving experience.
Dungeons and Raids in Midnight
Paul Kubit: Players can anticipate eight new dungeons in the expansion, including Murder Row, an investigative dungeon set within Silvermoon City, and the Den of Nalorakk, which incorporates story elements from the campaign.
Additionally, three raids are set to debut in the first season, embracing feedback from the community to create varied experiences across different raid types.World of Warcraft: Midnight will also feature a story mode to provide a broader access to the narrative elements involved in raiding.
Quality of Life Updates
Quality of life improvements are also center stage in this expansion. Players will enjoy features like persistently applied transmog options that sustain your character’s visual identity throughout leveling, providing both aesthetic satisfaction and gameplay coherence.
In summary, World of Warcraft: Midnight offers a wealth of new experiences and advancements that promise to enhance the gameplay experience, blending nostalgia with fresh ideas. The team at Blizzard is excited to share this new chapter and looks forward to a vibrant player community.
We appreciate your time and insights, Paul and Jade.
