World of Warcraft Game Director Addresses Console Rumors: ‘We Would Just Confirm It’

World of Warcraft and Console Rumors: What the Future Holds

For over two decades, World of Warcraft has been a mainstay in the gaming community, consistently drawing speculation about a potential console port. Recently, franchise Vice President Holly Longdale revealed that discussions with Microsoft took place following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, igniting renewed interest among fans.

Clarification from the Game Director

Despite the chatter, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas has refuted rumors suggesting that the upcoming expansion, Midnight, includes accessibility updates aimed at facilitating a future console launch. During an episode of the Unshackled Fury podcast, Hazzikostas addressed these fan theories directly:

“It is not. To be fully transparent, there’s no reason for us to hide anything about this. If we were actively working towards bringing World of Warcraft to consoles or a bunch of other platforms, we’d be saying: ‘We’re actively working towards it. We know we have a lot of work to do, but it’s a place where we want to land.’ Our focus remains right now on the PC-based experience.”

Hazzikostas elaborated on the challenge of balancing complexity with approachability in the game: “World of Warcraft is an incredibly complex game. Our goal has always been to ensure that the game is easy to learn yet offers depth that makes it hard to master.”

Accessibility in the Midnight Alpha

In reflecting on his experience with the Midnight Alpha, the director noted that significant hurdles still pose challenges for console compatibility.“There are still way too many skills and buttons to press compared to games like Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online, which were designed with consoles in mind, ”he stated. This suggests that a considerable overhaul would be necessary to make the MMORPG truly playable on console platforms, a venture that may not align with the studio’s strategic objectives.

Looking Ahead: Release Dates and Future Events

Currently, there is no official launch date for World of Warcraft: Midnight, although speculation hints at a potential release in February 2026. Fans of the franchise can also anticipate that early bird tickets for BlizzCon 2026 will become available tomorrow, offering a chance to stay engaged with upcoming developments from Blizzard Entertainment.

If you’re keeping an eye on World of Warcraft and its evolving landscape, stay tuned for ongoing updates, as this iconic MMORPG continues to adapt and grow despite speculation surrounding its future on console platforms.
