Transforming Document Management: Microsoft 365 Copilot’s New Audio Feature in Word

In today’s fast-paced world, managing large documents can be challenging, especially when time is of the essence. Microsoft has introduced a groundbreaking feature in Microsoft 365 Copilot for Word that allows users to listen to document overviews, turning complex reports into digestible audio files—much like podcasts or audiobooks.

Customizable Audio Experience

This innovative feature doesn’t just read aloud; it offers a customizable experience. Users can adjust the reading speed, navigate through the audio using playback controls, and even pause the reading to focus on specific sections. Once you’ve enjoyed your audio overview, you can also save it to OneDrive for later listening or sharing with others.

Getting Started with Audio Overviews

Currently, the voice document overview feature is available in Word for Windows (version 2506, build 18925.20138) and Word for the web. If you possess a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, you can easily access this feature by opening a document, clicking the Copilot button in the Home tab, and requesting an audio overview. Copilot will then generate the audio, accompanied by a convenient media player and playback controls.

Saving and Accessing Your Overviews

To save your audio overview, simply click on the three-dot button and select “Save to OneDrive.”For easy access later, all previously generated overviews are stored within your Microsoft 365 Copilot chat history.

Language and File Limitations

While the audio overview feature currently supports only English, Microsoft is actively working to expand this capability to additional languages in the near future. However, it’s important to note that there are some limitations:

  • Audio overviews can only be generated for online files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint; local files on your computer or external drives are not supported.
  • Files must contain a minimum of 100 words for the audio overview to be created.

Advanced AI Integration

Additionally, the Microsoft Copilot app now includes functionalities powered by GPT-5, both on computers and mobile devices, streamlining workflow and enhancing productivity.
