The Disappointing Debut of Wolf Man
The latest adaptation of the Universal monster franchise, Wolf Man, is off to a rocky start at the global box office. This remake features Christopher Abbott as a man grappling with his lycanthropic transformation, a struggle that endangers the lives of his wife, portrayed by Julia Garner, and their daughter, played by Matilda Firth. The film, directed by Leigh Whannell—who enjoyed critical acclaim for his work on the 2020 revision of The Invisible Man—has not fared well in its initial release.
Box Office Performance
Opening during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend, Wolf Man managed to secure the No. 3 spot at the domestic box office. It trailed behind the 2024 success Mufasa: The Lion King and another new release, One of Them Days.
According to Variety, the film is anticipated to finish its opening weekend with a worldwide gross of approximately $15.3 million. This figure combines a disappointing $4.83 million from 53 international markets with a domestic total of roughly $10.5 million from the first three days. Although the MLK Day weekend’s domestic earnings are projected to reach about $12 million by Monday, the impact on international revenue remains negligible. In stark contrast, Whannell’s previous film, The Invisible Man, debuted with an impressive $28.2 million in the domestic market alone.
