Exy: The Multifaceted Talent Behind WJSN
Chu Sojung, better known as Exy, has made a significant mark in the music industry as the leader and main rapper of the popular girl group WJSN. Beyond her idol activities, Exy has also ventured into acting, showcasing her versatile talent. However, what may not be widely known is her impactful role as a music producer.
A Rising Producer in the K-Pop Scene
Exy’s influence extends far beyond WJSN. She has contributed her songwriting and production skills to numerous other groups, creating memorable tracks that resonate with fans. Notable collaborations include ILLIT’s “Pimple,”CRAVITY’s “Bad Habits,”and THE BOYZ’s energetic track “PRISM.”
Insights from Exy on Her Recent Work
In a recent interview with Ten Asia, Exy shared her thoughts on IVE’s anticipated song “HEYA”for 2024, discussing the creative process behind it. She revealed, “I put a lot of thought into how to create a richer story based on the sun and the moon. Capturing IVE’s unique color added meaning to the project, and the positive feedback was gratifying. I never expected it to be the title track, which made the outcome even more fulfilling.”
Acknowledgment as a Copyright Powerhouse
Currently, Exy ranks among the “copyright powerhouses“in K-Pop, sharing this honor with renowned figures like G-Dragon from BIGBANG and (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon. Yet, her journey to this prestigious status was anything but straightforward; it required determination and navigating the intense and competitive landscape of music production.

The Challenges of Music Production
Interestingly, Exy explained that when producing for WJSN, her songs must first be selected through a competitive blind selection process. “The competition is extremely fierce. It’s quite demanding. Much like auditioning for a role, you need to be selected. Being credited for a song requires going through that entire process, which makes it all the more rewarding,” she expressed.
The Gender Divide in Production
In the same interview, Exy addressed the differences she perceives in producing for female versus male idol groups. She noted that producing for male groups tends to be easier, citing her familiarity with hip-hop as a contributing factor. “I’ve done a lot of rapping, which makes it enjoyable rather than difficult to work on tracks for male idols,” she concluded.
