Microsoft Announces Discontinuation of HoloLens 2

In a significant move last month, Microsoft declared that it would cease production of the HoloLens 2, its autonomous and self-contained holographic headset aimed primarily at enterprise applications. The tech giant urged its customers and partners to order units promptly, as supplies are dwindling.

Final Feature Release Unveiled

Following the discontinuation announcement, Microsoft has presented the last feature release for HoloLens 2. This update, based on the Windows Holographic 24H1 platform, comes with a new build number: 22621.1409. The update not only addresses bug fixes and security enhancements but introduces several new features aimed at improving user experience.

New Enhancements in the Update

  • System Text Size Adjustment: Users can now adjust the text size in the Start menu through Settings > Ease of Access > Text size, ensuring better readability.
  • Increased Text Scaling Options: During the initial setup, users can now modify text scaling settings up to 200%, catering to a more personalized experience.
  • Eye Calibration Flexibility: Users now have the option to skip eye calibration during the first-time setup, which can expedite the process, though it may lead to decreased accuracy in certain applications.
  • WinGet for App Downloads: With the upcoming retirement of the Microsoft Store for Business, an enhanced method for downloading app packages has been introduced via the latest WinGet release.
  • Upgraded OneDrive PWA App: Recent advancements in OneDrive’s functionality are now available through its PWA app on HoloLens 2, encouraging users to deploy it within their environments.

Future Support and Warranties

Microsoft has assured users that HoloLens 2 devices will continue receiving updates to address critical security vulnerabilities and significant functional issues until December 2027. Furthermore, the hardware warranty for purchased devices will remain unchanged, and Customer Service & Developer Support will be available until December 31, 2027.

Outlook on HoloLens Development

In its recent communications, Microsoft reaffirmed that there is no current roadmap for HoloLens and no plans to introduce new features or functionalities for the device at this time.
