Latest Update to Microsoft Photos App for Windows 11 Insiders
Microsoft has rolled out a significant update to the Photos app designed specifically for Windows 11 Insiders. This enhancement introduces an innovative feature that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically categorize extensive libraries of images, starting with version 2025.11090.25001.0
.
Streamlined Image Organization Through AI
The new auto-categorization function facilitates better organization of photos by generating specific categories which can be accessed via a “Categories”drop-down menu in the left navigation bar. Users can also utilize the search feature to locate categorized images quickly. Notably, the app is capable of recognizing and organizing images irrespective of their language, meaning that even documents like international receipts will be accurately labeled and sorted.
Manual Overrides and Feature Limitations
While the automated categorization is a valuable tool, there is a possibility for inaccuracies. As such, Microsoft encourages users to provide feedback and make manual adjustments to the categories. Currently, the Photos app can only generate four types of categories: screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes. One limitation worth noting is that this feature is exclusively available on Copilot+ devices equipped with advanced Neural Processing Units (NPUs).
Enhanced Functionality: Introducing Super Resolution
In addition to automatic categorization, the recent update brings the Super Resolution feature to Copilot+ PCs powered by Intel, Snapdragon, and AMD processors. This includes devices with Snapdragon X chips, AMD Ryzen AI chips, and the Intel Core Ultra 200 Series. Speculation suggests that Intel may soon extend Copilot+ capabilities to desktop systems with its upcoming hardware line, but for now, these advanced functions are only accessible on laptops, tablets, and select mini-PCs.
Updating the Photos App
Users can opt to manually update the Photos app or allow the Microsoft Store to handle updates automatically, as the option to disable updates is no longer available. It’s important to note that the introduction of new features will occur gradually, so there may be delays in availability for some users.
