Windows 11 is set to receive a useful enhancement for the Task Manager. Future updates will simplify the process of identifying the storage type of your computer. Currently, Task Manager can display “HDD”and “SSD”labels, but Microsoft aims to expand this feature to indicate whether your SSD is SATA, NVMe, or another variety.
This improvement was discovered in the latest Windows 11 preview build from the Beta Channel. Microsoft didn’t highlight it in the release notes, prompting users to uncover it independently.
If your device is running Windows 11 build 22635.4225, you can activate the updated Task Manager functionality using the ViVeTool application. Once completed, navigate to the Performance tab in Task Manager to observe your SSD and its type in parentheses.
- Download ViVeTool from GitHub and extract the files into an easily accessible folder.
- Open Command Prompt as an Administrator. To do this, press Win + R, input cmd, and hit Ctrl + Shift + Enter.
- Use the CD command to navigate to the folder containing the ViVeTool files. For instance, if you stored ViVeTool in C:\Vive, enter CD C:\Vive.
- Type vivetool /enable /id:51978387 and press Enter.
- Restart your computer and open Task Manager.
More Task Manager changes coming soon: disks will be labeled by type (NVMe, SATA etc.) in the Performance page – in the left pane and below graphs. (disabled by default, Beta 22635.4225.) pic.twitter.com/YNsUWzitIc

It’s important to note that you don’t have to wait for the upcoming update if you’re interested in identifying your SSD type without installing any third-party software. In this instance, Windows provides details about your drive, including its type, health status, temperature, capacity, partition style, and more.
