Windows 11 Gaining Traction Among Gamers Amid Windows 10’s Decline
As the end of support for Windows 10 draws near, many users are still hesitant to upgrade to Windows 11. Surprisingly, in the gaming sector, Windows 11 is experiencing significant growth. The latest data from Valve’s Hardware and Software Survey indicates that as of November 2024, Windows 11 has achieved a remarkable milestone, reaching nearly 53% market share among gamers.
Windows Dominates the Steam Ecosystem
Overall, Windows—including all variants such as Windows 11, 64-bit Windows 10, and 64-bit Windows 7—commands an impressive 96.56% of the Steam user base. As of last month, 52.98% of these users have switched to Windows 11, reflecting an increase of 4.18% from the previous month. Windows 7, unable to support the latest Steam updates, still holds a slight presence at 0.21% despite a minor decrease of 0.07 points.
Linux and macOS are on the Rise
In addition to the Windows operating system, both Linux and macOS have made modest gains on Steam. Linux users now account for 2.03% of the total, up by 0.03 points, while macOS users represent 1.41%, with an uptick of 0.02 points. Among Linux distributions, Arch Linux is currently the most popular, while macOS version 15.1 Sequoia is leading in its category.
Current Hardware Trends on Steam
When it comes to hardware, the statistics have remained largely stable over the past month. The average gaming PC on Steam is equipped with 16GB of RAM (46.02%), a six-core processor (31.07%), and features the Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card (4.89%). Additionally, the prevalent VRAM configuration is 8GB (35.17%), and the most common display resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels (55.98%). Notably, 64.23% of users opt for Intel processors, though this marks a decrease of 1.94 points. Nvidia continues to dominate the graphics market, securing a staggering 75.76% share.
A Note on Survey Reliability
It’s important to remember that participation in the Steam Hardware and Software Survey is voluntary, and Valve selects participants randomly, which may lead to some variability in the results. The survey aims to present an overview of platform averages and overall industry trends. For more comprehensive data, you can access the official survey results here.
