Addressing User Requests: A Comparison
In 2023, we compiled feedback from users who expressed their desires for the ideal Start menu in Windows 11. Now, it’s time to assess how Microsoft’s changes align with those requests. Please note that the updated Start menu is currently not available to the public.
1. Disabling the “Recommended”Section: Success!
Microsoft has successfully implemented the most sought-after feature, allowing users to deactivate the “Recommended”section entirely. This enhancement frees up space on the Start menu, catering to those who prefer a cleaner interface.
2. Customization Options: Still Limited
While the option to disable the Recommended section and switch among three views for the All apps list is now available, true customization remains lacking. For users craving more personalization, third-party tools like Windhawk and Start menu steppers can provide alternative styles.
3. Resizing the Start Menu: Implementation Needs Work
Currently, manual resizing of the Start menu, as seen in Windows 10, is unavailable. The new version adapts better to larger screens, showcasing more content, but users still desire the ability to customize the menu size.
4. Returning to Windows 10’s Layout: Not Happening
For those who long for the Windows 10 Start menu design, Microsoft has made it clear that it will not revert. Users frustrated with this decision might consider third-party options or stick with the older system.
5. All Apps in Grid View: Fully Implemented
A well-received addition is the option to toggle between a grid view and the traditional list for the All apps section. Microsoft has not only included this feature but also granted users the flexibility to choose their preferred layout.
6. Jump Lists Access: Requires Adjustment
Jump lists are now accessible via right-clicking pinned apps, but an inconsistency remains: disabling the Recommended section also disables jump lists on both the Start menu and taskbar, leaving some users quite frustrated. This is an issue that needs prompt resolution.
7. Default to All Apps List: Successfully Implemented
The new Start menu allows users to navigate directly to the All apps list without additional clicks. This enhancement introduces a seamless experience as users can scroll through their applications immediately.
8. A Full-Screen Start Menu: Still Missing
Despite some hints from Microsoft regarding the potential return of a full-screen menu, no features to support this have been introduced. Many users still cherish the full-screen option that existed in Windows 10 and Windows 8.
9. Live Tiles: Permanently Retired
Live tiles are effectively a thing of the past, just like Windows Phone, with no indications of a comeback in future updates.
10. Accent Color for the Start Button: Not Yet Implemented
The Start button continues to appear in blue, despite requests for it to adapt to the system’s accent color. This feature remains absent in the latest design.
