Windows 11 Gains Traction Among Gamers on Steam

While many Windows users remain hesitant to upgrade to Windows 11 — with a significant portion still utilizing Windows 10 before its support phase-out — the gaming community demonstrates a greater willingness to embrace the new operating system. According to Valve’s latest insights, Windows 11 achieved an impressive milestone in December 2024, becoming the most utilized OS on the Steam platform.

Current User Statistics: Windows 11 vs. Windows 10

The December Steam Hardware and Software Survey reveals that an impressive 54.96% of Windows users have transitioned to Windows 11, reflecting an increase of 1.98 percentage points in just one month. In contrast, the share of users sticking with Windows 10 has decreased to 42.39%, down by 0.92 points. Meanwhile, the aging Windows 7, which is now no longer compatible with the latest Steam version, has dropped to a mere 0.15%.

Challenges Faced by Windows 11 Users

Despite its prevailing popularity, Windows 11 is not without its challenges, particularly regarding gaming performance. The most recent update, known as version 24H2, has exhibited several issues, prompting Microsoft to temporarily halt its rollout for users leveraging the Auto HDR feature. Furthermore, some games have become unplayable following the update, presenting significant concerns for gamers. As of now, there is no definitive data on how many users have adopted version 24H2 or the extent of the impact from these bugs.

Steam User Demographics and OS Market Share

Interestingly, a staggering 96.10% of participants in the December 2024 survey reported using a Windows operating system to access Steam, with Linux users at 2.29% and macOS users at 1.61%.

Hardware Trends Among Gamers

When it comes to hardware preferences, the gaming community leans towards robust configurations. The survey indicated that 45.07% of gamers use machines with 16GB of RAM, while 31.67% opt for six-core processors. The Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics card, despite its discontinuation, remains popular among 5.88% of users. Additionally, 34.91% utilize systems equipped with 8GB of VRAM, and a significant majority, 56.12%, favor 1080p monitors.

Market Presence: Graphics and Processor Dominance

Nvidia continues to lead the GPU market, claiming a dominant 75.67% share, while AMD trails with 16.24%. In the CPU arena, Intel maintains a comparative advantage over AMD, holding 63.32% of the market against AMD’s 36.68%.

As the gaming landscape evolves, the shift from Windows 10 to Windows 11 continues to gain momentum, despite the challenges that accompany new updates.
