Windows 11 Paint Introduces Toolbar Hiding Feature and New AI Capabilities

Microsoft Paint has introduced a convenient new feature: an automatic toolbar toggle. This functionality allows users to hide the toolbar quickly, helping to maximize focus on the canvas. Additionally, you can collapse the toolbar using the arrow key, which is especially beneficial for those who frequently utilize Paint in their projects. This enhancement not only streamlines your workspace but also opens doors to various use cases that paint enthusiasts will appreciate.

The toolbar in Paint has seen significant growth following its recent UI revamp, resulting in it occupying more screen space. By enabling this new toggle, users can automatically hide the toolbar, creating a cleaner workspace. You can easily summon it back when adjustments, like changing brush sizes, are necessary. This feature is particularly advantageous when precision is key, allowing artists to fully concentrate on their canvas during detailed editing tasks, zooming, or making final adjustments.

Though the primary benefit of this toggle is to enhance focus, the flexibility it offers is also noteworthy. It would be interesting to see Microsoft introduce additional toggles, such as one to disable the increasingly present Copilot features in Paint, although this remains uncertain.

Microsoft Paint’s New AI Features: Exploring the “Labs”

Part of Microsoft’s innovative strides includes the “Windows AI Labs” program, designed for testing upcoming AI functionalities. Although access is limited, some users, including myself, are fortunate enough to explore the latest features available through Paint’s AI Labs, including a feature known as “Generative Edit.”

The Copilot within Paint has historically enabled image generation; however, the introduction of the Generative Edit feature marks a notable advancement. This tool utilizes an AI model that modifies images based on user prompts, enhancing the creative possibilities within the application. Notably, the underlying model seems to be proprietary to Microsoft rather than a variant of GPT.

Microsoft advises users to provide feedback in response to any unexpected or inappropriate outcomes generated by the AI, highlighting the necessity for vigilance when it comes to AI-generated content.

Though the features explored in AI Labs, such as the “Generative Edit, ” show promise, it’s important to note that they are not guaranteed permanence within Paint. Microsoft has a history of testing various features—such as the previous animations feature—only to retract them, even for those enrolled in the Labs.
