Windows 11 Notepad Right-Click Menu Overhaul: New File Explorer-Like UI Update

Notepad’s Right-Click Menu Revamp: A Shift Towards Clarity

Recent updates to Notepad are making quite an impact, particularly with the integration of Copilot functionalities. However, these advancements have led to a somewhat cluttered right-click menu. Fortunately, Notepad is set to introduce a refreshed user interface for its context menu, drawing inspiration from the simpler aesthetic of File Explorer.

The Challenge with the Current Context Menu

Presently, users encounter a tall and overcrowded context menu inundated with various options, especially those related to Copilot. This includes several non-essential features such as “Define with Bing, ” “Rewrite, ” and “Summarise, ” which make the menu cumbersome.

Introducing a Streamlined Solution

In response to user feedback, Microsoft is currently testing a compact version of the right-click menu that streamlines access to frequent commands. The redesigned menu not only reduces height but also organizes actions more intuitively.

Key Features of the Updated Menu

The new UI strategically places frequently used actions—cut, copy, paste, select all, and delete—on a prominent top row accompanied by clear, large icons. This visual clarity is beneficial, as the icons communicate their functions effectively at a glance.

For those new to technology or with accessibility concerns, Microsoft ensures that each icon is supported by descriptive text labels. For instance, the scissor icon for “cut”is accompanied by the word “cut, ” providing an easy-to-understand reference.

Reflection on the Integration of AI Features

While the new layout enhances usability, some users express unease regarding the significant presence of AI features within Notepad. Although the Copilot shortcut can be disabled, options like “Define with Bing” remain fixed in the menu, which some users believe could contribute to continued clutter.

While it’s not a case of being overly critical, many can’t help but wish for a more minimalist context menu that prioritizes essential functionalities over optional AI-enhanced features.

A Look Ahead

The revamp of Notepad’s right-click menu signifies Microsoft’s commitment to refining user experience, addressing clutter while enhancing accessibility—two critical components in software design.
