Statcounter has unveiled its most recent data revealing the global market share of desktop Windows operating systems. According to the report, in September 2024, Windows 11 experienced a remarkable increase, achieving a new all-time high since its launch in October 2021. Now, nearly three years post-launch, Windows 11 has reached a market share of 33.37%.
In September 2024, Windows 11’s market share rose by 1.74 percentage points, a noteworthy increase considering the operating system had been losing market share only months earlier. Year-over-year, the growth stands at 9.73 percentage points, with Windows 11 at 23.64% in September 2023.
As Windows 11 continues to attract more users monthly, Windows 10 is gradually witnessing a decrease in its popularity. Despite this, the ten-year-old operating system still significantly outperforms its successor, holding a market share two to one. Statcounter reports Windows 10 at 62.79%, with a decline of 1.35 points in September 2024, marking a decrease of 8.83 points year-over-year.
This trend is anticipated to persist as Windows 10 enters its final year of mainstream support. Furthermore, Microsoft is expected to introduce a major feature update for Windows 11 later this month, which, along with the upcoming processor launches from Intel and AMD, may boost the operating system’s adoption rate.
Collectively, Windows 10 and 11 command a remarkable 96.16% of the market, leaving the remaining 3%+ primarily to Windows 7, which maintains a steady 2.85% share.
