Windows 11 Market Share Decline and Windows 10 Growth

Windows 11 Market Share Decline and Windows 10 Growth

Windows 11 Market Dynamics: An Overview

As of October 2024, Windows 11 achieved its highest-ever market share, surpassing 35.5%, as reported by Statcounter. This upward momentum followed a surprising downturn where the operating system experienced a drop in user base for three consecutive months. However, the trend appears to be reversing once more; after a slight decline in November, Windows 11 has faced another setback.

Recent Market Share Trends

Statcounter’s most recent findings reveal that Windows 11 has lost more than 1.48 percentage points over two months. Specifically, the market share decreased from 34.94% in November to 34.1% in December 2024, marking a decline of 0.84 points. In contrast, Windows 10 has managed to regain some of its previous users, even with the impending end of its mainstream support scheduled for less than eleven months from now.

Windows 10: The Dominant Player

Currently, Windows 10 maintains its position as the leading Microsoft operating system, boasting a market share of 62.73%, which reflects an increase of 0.9 points. The upcoming deadline in October 2025 raises questions about the future of Windows 10, especially since many users find themselves unable to upgrade to Windows 11 due to its stringent hardware requirements, which include the need for TPM 2.0.

Options for Users Unable to Upgrade

For those unable to officially upgrade to Windows 11 and not ready to purchase new hardware, Microsoft offers the Extended Security Program. This program provides an additional 12 months of updates for a fee of $30. In addition, users may look into third-party solutions, such as 0patch, which can extend support for up to five years, though these options also come at a cost. Some users are even attempting to bypass Windows 11’s rigorous hardware constraints through various unofficial methods.

Current Market Share Statistics

According to Statcounter’s data, which is considered a reliable source despite the lack of official figures from Microsoft, the current landscape of Windows operating systems is as follows:

  2. Windows 11: 34.1% (-0.84 points)
