Microsoft is set to enhance the functionality of Task Manager in its upcoming Windows 11 update by introducing a revamped approach to calculating CPU utilization. This improvement aims to bring the native tool in line with the capabilities of popular third-party applications.
Enhanced CPU Monitoring with Windows 11’s Task Manager Update
Recognizing the limitations of Task Manager’s current performance metrics compared to third-party solutions, Microsoft has made significant strides towards an effective user experience. With the new update, detailed in their Windows Insider blog, Task Manager will utilize a refined methodology for displaying CPU usage metrics. This shift signifies a move toward more reliable and consistent monitoring, enhancing Task Manager’s functionality.
We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.

This update will unify the CPU utilization figures across the Processes, Performance, and Users pages of Task Manager. As a result, users will notice that the displayed data is now comparable to that available on third-party platforms, reducing discrepancies and enhancing the overall CPU monitoring experience. With this improvement, Windows 11 aims to provide a robust alternative to applications like HWINFO, although the exact rollout date remains to be confirmed.

For users who prefer the existing calculation method, Microsoft has included an optional column labeled “CPU Utility”on the Details tab, facilitating backward compatibility. As part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360 included in the 24H2 update, these enhancements will be rolled out gradually, ensuring a smoother experience as Microsoft continues to optimize functionality for its user base.
