Microsoft Introduces Windows 11 23H2 Release Preview Build for Insiders

Microsoft is excited to announce the rollout of the new Windows 11 23H2 Release Preview build aimed at Windows Insiders. The update, identified as KB5058502 with build number 22631.5409, introduces several enhancements, notably the ability to remap both the Copilot key and the Win + C shortcut. This version also features a new Push to Talk functionality for Copilot, an FAQ section in the settings, along with several additional improvements.

  • [Copilot]
    • New Feature! You can now access Copilot using the Win + C shortcut. Personalize your experience through the “Customize Copilot key on keyboard” option found in Settings > Personalization > Text input. For those on Enterprise editions, refer to the Updated Windows and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat experience for further details.
    • New Feature! To initiate “Press to talk” with Copilot, hold the Copilot key or the Win + C combination for two seconds if you lack a specified Copilot key. Press Esc or pause for a few seconds to conclude the session. An alternative method to interact with Copilot is using Alt + Spacebar. This addition provides a voice interface for instant responses while you continue your tasks seamlessly.
  • [Taskbar Search] Enhanced support for web search providers in Windows Search for the EEA, with improved visibility.
  • [Settings] New! Discover common questions and solutions about your PC and Windows 11 in the newly created FAQ section located at Settings > System > About. This section addresses themes such as system setup, performance, and compatibility.
  • [Taskbar Configuration] New! Administrators now have the capability to configure taskbar policies that prevent specific apps from being repinned during subsequent policy refresh cycles by employing the new PinGeneration option.
  • [Voice Access] Resolved: The voice access feature occasionally freezes displaying the error “working on it” during dictation.
  • [Widgets] New! Enhancements to the Lock screen Widgets experience for users in the European Economic Area (EEA).Aside from accessibility improvements, the weather widget on the Lock screen now allows customization. To personalize your weather widget, navigate to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen and select the “Customize widget” option available in the weather widget’s menu. More widget customization options are expected in the future.
  • [Windows Share]
    • New! Users can now make last-minute edits to images being shared via the Windows Share interface, including options to crop, rotate, and apply filters.
    • New! Dragging a local file from File Explorer or the desktop prompts a tray at the top of the screen, allowing users to drop the file into a suggested application or access more options to open the complete Windows Share window.
  • [Input Enhancements]
    • Resolved: Voice typing issues in the touch keyboard when utilizing the Chinese (Simplified) narrow layout.
    • Resolved: An issue where unexpected character insertion would occur in password fields when navigating the Symbols section of the touch keyboard.

Normal Rollout Improvements

  • This update encompasses improvements being gradually rolled out. Areas highlighted in bold brackets denote specific modifications:
  • [Blue Screen Errors] Resolved: The update corrects an issue leading to blue screen errors on devices.
  • [HoloLens Features] Resolved: An issue prevented the HoloCamera app from saving photographs on HoloLens due to folder access problems, along with minor issues related to Mixed Reality Capture.
  • [Memory Management] Resolved: This update fixes an Input Service issue causing escalated memory consumption that negatively impacted performance, particularly in multi-user, multi-lingual, and remote desktop scenarios.
  • [Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA)] Updated: Profiles have been refreshed for various mobile operators.
  • [Windows Shell] Resolved: This update addresses issues where Windows Explorer and Start Menu become unresponsive when a device is linked to an Azure Active Directory (AAD) account.
  • [Windows Update and Servicing] Resolved: Fixed an issue wherein the Windows Update service failed to function when devices running Windows 11 22H2 or 23H2 attempted to download the Windows 24H2 feature update via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
