Windows 11 KB5055622 Beta Update Enhances Quick Machine Recovery and Taskbar Icons

Today marks an exciting development for Microsoft as they unveil the latest build for the Windows 11 24H2 Beta channel designated for Insiders. The newly released build, 26120.3671 under KB5055622, boasts an array of enhancements and novel features designed to improve user experience. Among the advancements is an upgrade to the recently introduced Quick Machine Recovery feature alongside a new Taskbar icon scaling option, as well as various bug fixes.

Overview of New Features Being Gradually Rolled Out

Taskbar Icon Scaling

Microsoft is initiating the rollout of taskbar icon scaling aimed at optimizing the Windows taskbar for better accessibility. This feature ensures that users can swiftly access their favorite applications, even when the taskbar is brimming with pinned or open apps. As your taskbar fills up, the icons will automatically reduce in size, enhancing visibility and allowing for a more seamless workflow without needing an additional navigation menu.

Microsoft acknowledges that user preferences vary, thus offering settings to personalize this feature:

  • When taskbar is full: By default, icons will shrink when the taskbar is full, allowing for easier access.
  • Never: Users can opt to keep their icons at the same size regardless of how many applications are open.
  • Always: Users who prefer smaller icons can set them to be consistently small.

To adjust your icon scaling preferences, right-click on an empty space in the taskbar, select “Taskbar settings, ” navigate to the “Taskbar behaviors” section, and choose your preferred setting for “Show smaller taskbar buttons.”

Enhanced File Sharing Capabilities

Windows has simplified the file-sharing process through a newly introduced drag tray feature. When dragging a file from File Explorer or your desktop, a convenient tray will display at the top of your screen. This allows users to drop the file into one of the showcased applications or select “More…” to access the Windows share menu.

Quick Machine Recovery Test Package

Following the announcement of Quick Machine Recovery last week, we are pleased to introduce the test remediation package, which is now available for Windows Insiders. This package facilitates the full experience of QMR in action. Once “test mode” is activated, the “Quick machine recovery update for Windows 11” will automatically install via QMR. To verify its installation, navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Note that access to the remediation package may be rolled out gradually, so not all users may see it immediately.
