Microsoft is currently evaluating an exciting new feature for Windows 11 users—a streamlined option in the system tray designed to facilitate quick network speed tests.

This promising feature was discovered by the well-known Windows Insider Phantomofearth, part of the Windows Insider Program. Screenshots shared by the insider revealed that the feature can be accessed through the network and internet icon, specifically the Wi-Fi icon. A simple right-click will reveal a pop-up menu featuring the new function.

The newly added option is labeled “Perform Speed Test, ”accompanied by a speedometer icon for easy identification. Another screenshot indicates the presence of a “Test internet speed”button, conveniently located in the quick settings panel at the bottom right corner of the network/Wi-Fi selection area.

According to findings reported by Tom’s Hardware, both methods for initiating the speed test function similarly. Selecting either button sends you to Bing in your web browser, where the speed test is conducted. This design essentially serves as a web shortcut, allowing users to run a speed test without needing to navigate externally—though, users can always open Bing and search for “speed test”themselves to access the same functionality.

Alternative Speed Testing Methods

For simplicity, many users, including myself, prefer utilizing fast.com, the Netflix speed test, because of its straightforward access—simply a few keystrokes initiate the test without further fuss. It is assumed that Microsoft aims to provide a similarly efficient experience with this new shortcut, particularly beneficial for those unfamiliar with speed testing procedures.

Availability and Future Considerations

This speed test shortcut is currently accessible to users in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels of the Windows Insider Program. While the convenience is noteworthy, there is significant demand for a dedicated app that allows for speed testing directly without relying on a web browser.
