Since its launch in 2021, the Windows 11 taskbar has significantly improved, and it is now set to receive updates that will enhance its functionality even further. Among the notable additions is a vibrant battery icon that visually communicates the device’s charging status—turning green while charging and red when battery levels are critically low. Users will also have the option to enable a battery percentage display for more precise tracking.
These advancements are part of the Windows 11 updates identified as Build 26200.7019 or Build 26100.7019 (KB5067036), which are being rolled out as an optional update. However, for those who prefer to wait, these features will also be included in the upcoming Patch Tuesday scheduled for November 11.
Exploring the New Colorful Battery Icon

The traditional white battery icon in Windows 11 has evolved: it now features colors that help convey vital information at a glance. When the device is plugged in, the icon lights up green, displaying a bolt symbol; if battery saver mode is activated (with the device unplugged), it turns orange. This change aims to enhance user awareness regarding their device’s power status.

Notably, Windows 11’s energy saver feature is automatically activated when the battery level drops below 30%.Users have the flexibility to activate the energy saver manually as well. The previous icon—a leaf—was not particularly informative. Given the focus has shifted more towards energy conservation rather than merely optimizing battery life, the new orange indicator aligns well with this updated approach.
During testing, Windows Latest observed that once the battery charge falls below 6%, the icon turns red, prompting users to connect their device to a power source immediately.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft has removed the distinct icon for smart charging, which previously indicated devices that support this feature. Smart charging allows a device to charge up to 80% and then pause charging, and while it once featured a unique lightning bolt with a heart symbol, it has now been streamlined. Under the new system, battery levels from 0% to 80% show green (charging, with a bolt), and reaching 80% triggers a plug icon, making it easy for users to engage full charging.
Changes to Battery Icon Size
If you notice that the battery icon now occupies more space on the taskbar, it is intentional. Microsoft has communicated this design choice, explaining their rationale: “We have extended the length of the battery itself and simplified the number of overlays from the top left corner to the middle, allowing for clearer color differentiation and quicker identification of device status.” The design aims to provide a more intuitive experience, emphasizing visibility with different colored indicators for quick reference.
Battery Percentage Display Option
To activate the new percentage display, navigate to System > Power & battery, and toggle on “Show battery percentage.” This adjustment provides a clear status check on your power level, even as the icon requires a bit more space.

While some users may be concerned about the increased size of the icon, Microsoft insists that this modification was essential for integrating the new color and functionality features cohesively.

The rollout of the updated battery icon and other associated functionalities is currently in progress and is expected to become widely available on various devices after the November 11, 2025, update.
